Is this possible? Safety issue

Had a guy buy a used 3006 off of me. I shipped it to him, he took it to the range, was happy with how it shot. He then notifies me that while hunting, he had a moose in his sights, and when he clicked the safety off the rifle discharged. The gun is a 110 Savage, the safety isn't on the bolt action. I figure he had gloves on or something stupid, and it was his fault that the rifle discharged, nothing to do with the safety. I have used this rifle for 3 seasons, put a lot of shells down the barrel, never had this happen. I refunded him and he returned the rifle. I want to give this rifle to a friend, but I don't want to sell or give anything that is unsafe to anyone. I am asking because I will simply give it to a smith to be repaired/checked out if this is at all possible before I give it away, but if its not possible then I don't want to just waste money getting it checked out by a smith. I played with it unloaded when I received it, couldn't make it happen again, nor had it ever happpened prior. He also let it slip while we were conversing that he needed the money so I suspect he really couldn't afford it, but wanted or needed something to hunt with and then got an ear full from the Mrs, or needed beer money or something...maybe even simply found a better deal elsewhere.

I know better safe than sorry, but I thought the safety simply blocked the trigger from being pulled, has nothing to do with holding the firing pin back on that model.

Is it an older 110? There was a recall a decade ago IIRC about a certain model 110.

Savage/Stevens had made the rifle fire when dropped or jarred while rifle was in the horizontal position. Possibly yours may have similar issue if he bumped it then took the safety off?

Heres what I found after you made me curious.........

SAVAGE
MODEL 110E,
.30-06 SPRINGFIELD CALIBER, RIFLE

WARNING The rifle did not fire with its safety engaged. However, with the safety “off” it fired when struck on top of the receiver bridge or grip area of the buttstock from underneath, regardless of the whether the rifle is in an horizontal, vertical or upside down position.

Try throwing it in the freezer for half an hour to simulate cold weather conditions... pull the trigger, then throw the safety off and see if anything goes 'click'. You could also try slamming the bolt home as hard and fast as possible to see if it stays cocked.

Saw this happen with an H&H .300 about 40 years ago. Someone had lubed the firing pin and spring with grease, it was minus ten or so and back at the car, friend flipped off the safety to unload and it instantly fired, fortunately pointed UP! Since then I have always kept hunting rifle ignition systems dry.

Most of the times when such things happen, it's because someone fooled with the trigger adjustment.

is there a way to check serial numbers to see if it was recalled or anything? I would assume its much older than 10 years ago, but Im not sure how to tell...

Try contacting Savage directly. They have a Canadian facility in Lakefield, ON Phone 705-652-8000. If no luck there try contacting the US branch - (413) 642-4260 for Historical Information.

It is also possible that the gent messed with the trigger pull to lighten it and then had his oops, panicked and turned some screws back before sending you the gun.

yup very possible. Maybe I am the sucker for taking the gun back, but in the end if he wasn't honest Karma will even the score.
