competition weighted barrel, brand new in SS or nickel I cannot tell which.

Funny story to me, a guy orders this gun a year ago with a deposit and then complains when it is not in, in 3 months and keps complaining. Then hires a lawyer to write a nasty letter and gets most of his deposit back in the form of a company cheque. He then waits until it becomes stale dated and asks his lawyer to cash it (made out to them in trust).

Anyway it is now in the local gunshop and she tells me there is only 2 in canada of these type of revolvers, is she B S'ing. I used to collect colts but now into longer range stuff.

Nice looking gun though it looks kinda like a python as it has a WEIGHTED BARREL you can take some of the weights out I think,

any thoughts as I wondered if it is rare or just uncommon

The "6" on the front of the series number indicates stainless in the S&W system. Nickel guns have the same numbering as the blued guns.

A weighted factory barrel suggests that it's an inhouse custom gun from the S&W Performance Center.

~ The Model 686 does have an underlug as standard production.
~ Jarvis Gunsmithing did sell an aftermarket barrel weight that slid over the underlug.

is the 5 inch barrel 686 from performance center? with the rim cut on the back of cylinder to fit full moonclip?
That's a great one and will be sold very soon. I saw one in my local gun shop yesterday and I think I won't the see it in the visit next week.
A lot of Ruger SAs sit there for long time and wait for buyers, the only S&W sit there more than two weeks is model 617 (.22LR, 10 round)

Is this the one they're selling? The price seems maybe a bit high if it is but not unreasonably though.

YES looks nice doesn't it,

not into revolvers anymore but this was nicer than the run of the mill stuff you see in most gunshops, it was not under the counter but in the safe so only a few have seen it,

a tiny cylinder ring has formed, would this be from the factory as I know colts normally do not have a cylinder ring when I used to buy them 20 years ago

Hmmm...not sure. I went through a bunch of S&W revolvers a few years ago but I haven't bought one new since 1987 so I don't know what to expect these days. I would not be surprised if it had been test-fired at the factory, though. I've got a 5" 686 "Light Rail" from the Performance Center--it has the best DA and SA trigger pulls I've ever felt on a revolver.
