Is this repairable?

Maybe all of Bob’s buddies had a 99c as well and it was the only way he could find his own rifle???... why right in the checkering Bob?
Anyhow if I apply furniture stripper to the checkering can I remove the stain with a toothbrush or something similar? I like Guntechs idea to cut it deeper then restain.

I've had good luck removing finish from checkering with brushes. You might need to go over it more than once, or use stiffer parts cleaning type of brushes.

Tape a brush to a reciprocating saw blade to make life easier, or get a spiral brush and use a drill.

As a few say, recutting the checkering would solve that mess, the other part on the wood you could try warm water/steam and a little sanding to raise and reduce the appearance. the metal, just try some cold blue in the letters, sometimes it at least makes it less noticeable, otherwise its probably a good bit more work to get that out of there.
I used to see this from time to time back in the day, usually just making it less obvious was the best you could do without sinking more money into fixing it than the gun was worth.

What you've got there is a classic hunters rifle.

she's a beaut, cherish er!

I ve seen a few similar guns marked like that. It was a popular idea in the 60,s.
It's a shame that particular rifle was engraved like that. He could have been a little more discreet.

Why not build a new stock for it and make it your own? The cross hatch area is going to be hard. I’d sand it down flush and then redo the cross hatch, would take some time and a good jig

I think I met that guy. He had 14 different keys to 14 different door handles/ dead bolts on his home. Shame he did that to a gun. Sand and refinish is all that will work.

personally, sand out the checkering, strip all wood, and re-finish. I've done alot of stock re-furbishing, and it could look good - not perfect, but good.

Whut a fruck'n shame.

Kuvver the scope with duck tape and spray bawx liner over it.
Yewse Linex chit so it won't come awff.

If you really wanted to try to fix the checkering, perhaps routering it out and inlaying a new piece of checkered wood. Perhaps in a darker color would make it really stand out nicely. Or even inlaying a nice small strip of darker walnut just where the engraving was done.

Looks like cut to me, that is the easy part as guntech said, try a bit of good cold blue on the barrel, even a felt marker pen would help, just kidding
the stock could be fixed, by a good furniture restorer with shellac sticks, or sand and refinish all the wood.

That isn't Hemmingway's rifle, it was "Fudd Bob's". Sand and refinish the wood, do some relbluing, and then remove, crush and burn those abominations that are holding the scope 6" above the bore. You'll then have a functional rifle that doesn't insult the eyes.
