Got a couple cases with chips in the mouth of the neck. Are these two safe to still use? I already trimmed them to oal hopping to get them out but just wasn't enough.

Thanks guys. I posted in Hunting BC and got a lot of replies from people who don't reload saying to toss them. Figured Id get a way better reply from here than their. Loading them up after this message!

be a lamb and explain what the danger is
inquiring minds want to know

Damage such as this might indicate micro cracks in the neck which can cause cases to rupture, with gases possibly escaping into your face, brass fragments being lodged in the chamber, stuck cases and a whole whack of other issues. Why chance it?

I've shot cases with cracks in the neck and didn't experience any of your concerns.
I sometimes dent the case mouth in the press when it is not properly seated to no ill consequences.
I do understand your "better safe than sorry" position but in this case it is not warranted.

General rule of thumb, if you need to post on multiple online communities because you have a doubt about the safety of brass, toss it. ;)
It is really hard to tell from this one picture if that brass is damaged or not and to what extent. I do agree that a small ding on the neck's rim is not a huge issue, but without having the brass in hand, I would not recommend to someone to reload it and possibly chance them being injured. There really is no room for argument on that point right?

I'm not going to try to talk you out of your reloading comfort zone but people have had head separation with no ill effects.

ok, I'm being obscure above here, I apologize for not giving the explanation.
it is the chamber that withstands the pressure while the brass just ... well expands inside.
should the brass crack, a little bit of gas may make it out of the chamber but that's what the chamber vent holes are for.
other than that, you're good to go.

Just so everyone is aware these chips happened because I dropped my cases on the concrete outside. I use my case tumbler outside so not to make so much noise in the apartment building. I dropped some on the ground and those two were damaged like that. It didn't turn out that way because of firing them. This is their 4th time being reloaded. I've fired a 1000rd crate of Norinco surplus 7.62x51 with cracks in the neck with no damage to the gun.

I've reloaded ones that were worse then those and used them with no issues
Just keep an eye on them for any cracks afterwards.
If they really bother you then toss em

Unless they are Some kind of obscure brass why chance it. Is brass becoming hard to find now?
I'm literally walking on brass every step I take at my club. It's almost annoying when it rolls under your feet on the pavement.

Shoot it. Champfering would be good idea, but you would do that to fresh trimmed brass, anyway.

The part of the case that matters is the head end - the last half inch of the case. This expands to form a gas plug for the barrel breech.

You don't want to load a case with a crack at that end. The front 3/4 of the case is just a holder for powder and bullet.

I've reloaded those with no probs as well. I use 'em for plinking rounds. After the next shooting and FL sizing, there's a good chance those case mouth dings will get trimmed flush when you trim them.

I just had a single 9mm case with the exact same dent. I tossed it. Not worth the chance to me or my family depending on who ended up with it.
Just my humble opinion...
