Noob question here - thanks for the info in advance

I'm reloading hornady xtp 124 grain 9mm. I seated a dummy round to get the correct COL. (hornady manual states 1.16). But the bullet didnt look safe or seated correctly.

I seated it to just above the shoulder and now sit at 1.07 COL but my powder is 5.6 grains...is this COL too short for that load? Dont want a bad experience...Not sure if i should have lowered the load to comp for the shorter COL (max grains said 5.9 at 1.16 col)

Thanks for the advice

what powder?

when you say seat correctly, do you mean in the chamber of your gun?

being .03 grains away from max, i personally would be fine shooting it.

Hodgdon HS-6.

Manual says 5.3 is min and 5.9 is max. I was loading at 5.7.

The round, at 1.07 chambers fine in my S&W M&P 9 and is only a hair shorter than Remmington UMC that i have shot successfully through it so it isnt the length that concerns me so much, but that I may have accidentally loaded it too hot with having a shorter COL

if you have a bullet puller, pull one of the factor umc rounds and compare over all bullet(projectile) length and see how they compare.

when i load and don't see my bullet type, i just go by weight only, i load it so it fits into my guns chamber.

There is a large safety factor inherent in common load data. Changing seating depth a bit isn't going to make one bit of difference. A too short seating depth can negatively impact accuracy though. You should seat as long as will reliably cycle through the action and not stick in the throat.
