So this will be my first scope and I hate to go down to the store completely clueless. Im just getting my hunting license and am currently putting together gear- a model 70 featherweight in 30-06. I wont be attempting 250 yard shots or more- probably less I'd imagine.

I like to buy gear once and not worry about it later and I hear leupold makes good stuff but dont know a darn thing about scopes really- or what kind of $$ I should be spending.

Heres a vx-3: 3.5 -10 x 40

http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/scopes/centerfire-rifle-scopes/vx-3-riflescopes/prod269139.html

I can also get a 3.5-10 x 50 for $100 more but I wanna be able to mount this with low rings for a better fit.

Wouldnt buy a thing without asking the experience folks here first- good idea?

vx 3 with the 40mm would be a great choice. you will be using for years to come. you might also look at 2.5x8 36mm. its a nice compact scope that gives up little over the 3.5x10.

Id put a 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest on that gun. Great glass for under $500. Check out Prophet River, they will beat WSS prices and customer service every time.

Cheers!!

For the money you are talking I would look at minox 3-9x40, meopta 3-9x42 and of course the conquest 3-9x40. German glass and excellent scopes. I would not buy a leupold if it were my money.

Cheers

that might be the ticket. its actually doable at $550.00.

$509 at Prophet River as others have pointed out.

I like my VX-3 2.5-8x36mm with B&C reticle (+$80)! Great low light scope and not too bulky. It definitely doesn't need high scope rings and still has plenty of clearance for the bolt handle and my fingers. :)

You have a featherweight rifle (though not truly a feather weight). I wouldn't scope such a rifle with a scope with a 40mm objective. 2.5-8x36mm Leupold would be my first choice.

The FX3 6x42 would be a better match if he's worried about weight. The long mounting surface is better suited to a LA rifle. But honestly the 3.5-10x40 doesn't weigh much more than the 2.5-8x36...

If you compare average prices on Canadian and American websites for various scope brands you will see they are quite similar with Canada having VERY SLIGHTLY higher prices in most cases. The exception to this is Leupold. The VX-3 is about $200 more in Canada than the US. They are competitors in the US for the money but don't take the best buy crown. Since everything else compares to US prices and the Leupolds do not, then, in my opinion, they are not worth the asking price in Canada.

I'll put another vote for the 3-9 Conquest.

LeBaron Sports has Elite 4200 2.5-10X40 for 299.00 That's a helluva deal and you'll pay far more for any comparable scope.

:agree: IMHO that's the best advice so far. I would aim for litte less power like Elite 4200 1,5x6x36mm or so. German glass used to be better 20years ago, these days you are paying thru the nose for the past glory. For me the clasic oxymoron is mentioning the German, Conquest & Victory in one sentence. Now like cars the Japan made glass is not only better but way more value for your dollar as well. And yes the leupold scopes are good and have terrific warranty but b/c the Canadian pricing not worth the consideration. That's my story and I am sticking to it....GR8

$750 for a Leupold VX-3 RIFLESCOPE !!
For those less fortunate nutz whose 649 numbers haven't paid off yet the Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40mm with the "wide duplex" reticle:rockOn: sounds about right for that rifle.
Less than $300 and the most scope for the money that you can buy.
I have 3 of the Leupy 3-9x40mm Rifleman on magnum rifles and 6 of the 2-7x33mm Rifleman on Guide Guns, Baikal IZH-94, Rem Mod 7, and a BLR in .308 Win.
Fantastic scopes with very accurate adjustments and crystal clear optics that will stand up to big magnum recoil.

$750? The link defaults to the 3.5-10 x 50 and it's listed for $739. As previously stated it's also priced better at Prophet River.

For the same price you could get the VX-1 over a Rifleman and have 1/4 MOA adjustments instead of 1/2 MOA. I never understood the Rifleman line.

I bought my VX3 3.5-10x40 for $660 with a boone and crockett reticle (same scope at basspro is $580US). wouldn't hesitate to buy another

I do understand the Rifleman line - I own 10 of them.
I also own Bushnells, Redfields (1st and 2nd generation), Swarovskis, Zeiss, S+Bs, Minox and prefer the Rifleman for hunting applications.
The Leupold Rifleman scopes are continuous dial adjustment for windage and elevation rather than 1/4" or 1/2" click.
I prefer the continuous dial over incremental dial adjustments.
I also prefer the less than $300 price tag.
