Is this turkey safe to eat? **gross pics**

Well I bagged my first ever turkey! 13/16" spurs, 6.5" beard, I dont know how much it weight.

I discovered that this bird had been shot already when I was butchering it. His whole left side was nasty looks like someone tried to shoot him out of a roost by the angle of the shot and he was shot up his butt!!

well is the meat from the right side still good it had no shot in it and looked fine. The shot looks like copper. I'm worried about the metal content in the meat, or infections in the blood. I hate to waste the meat but I'd hate it even more if i get everyone sick at camp during pickerel opener.
still one of the best, most exciting hunts ever!!!
 
I am a turkey farmer, and a butcher's son, so I have quite a bit of experience. No way I would recommend anybody eat that infected meat. The conservation officers should give you a new tag if you explain what happened and show the pictures. At least that's how it works in Saskatchewan if you have bagged inedible big game, hope you get another chance.
 
Ah man, that sucks. Don't eat it, bury it and let the worms have the runs!

Tip #1. Call the MNR, tell em that you killed a bird that someone else had shot and left for dead, send them the pics if they really want to see it, and see if they will re issue you another tag... it can't hurt.

Tip #2, find a better place ( like out by the treeline) to breast your bird, that crap will make a mess of your quad and garage... pin feathers get into everthing that has oil on it!
 
I believe that you quite simply shortened the suffering of this poor bird... Ask the conservation officers for a new tag .
 
All that nasty brown stuff is dead/dying tissue.... that was dumping toxins into the bloodstream.... that was going to the healthy tissue.
That bird is not fit for human consumption!

Nice turkey and sorry about your luck. Worth asking for a replacement tag though.

BTW- the turkey is grateful you ended its misery! :cheers:
 
I have shot waterfowl in the past that had been hit by someone's pellets. Lots of yellow scar tissue...just plain nasty to look at. I chose to bush the birds. As for your turkey my suggestion would be to take the carcass to your local MNR office. I'm sure there will be no problem issuing you another tag. Now if you are lucky enough to bag another gobbler!
 
Damn just my luck, oh well its been awesome trying to hunt these birds and this just gives me more time in the bush. Thanks for all the quick replies, and I'll call the mnr in the morning maybe I'll save $27.
 
I spoke with the mnr office in peterborough this morning and the lady checked it out and said all I could do is buy another tag and keep hunting. She said they actually get this call quite often, which is sad.

It's kinda sad to hear that this is a common occurrence. I've let a bunch of gobblers go that I couldn't get within AT LEAST 25 yards for a head and neck shot.
Shooting those big buggers in the body with the legal shot will just hurt em and load up the meat with tooth destroyers if you manage to kill them.
