I've shot a couple of bucks that came out second best in a fight with another one. The winner will normally drive his tines into the haunches of the loser when he runs him off. The deep puncture wounds and scarring are something to see.

I believe that you quite simply shortened the suffering of this poor bird... Ask the conservation officers for a new tag .

+1 I know around here with moose we can get a new set of tags in this situation.
