Is Weatherby a decent rifle?

Really depends on the model.....they literally go from the outhouse to the penthouse. The Vanguard is their lower end and they are a good rifle for the cost and are available in an array of non-Weatherby calibres. If you are talking Mark V, they yes they are a good but expensive rifle. I'd say good value for what you pay.
The one I was holding was a Vanguard, the stock looked like it had a layer of glass on it, deep rich laminate with a stunning luster.
Now this rifle was priced at about $1100, seems steep for an entry level rifle.
The owner of the shop, who has always been pretty forward with me said it only comes from Weatherby's custom shop, what ever that is.

Hmm he must have been confused, because Im pretty sure that the vangaurd series is made by howa in japan, only the mark V line is made by weatherby's custom shop. Both are good rifles though, the vangaurds are pretty nice for the money, but if your gonna buy a top of the line vanguard like the sub moa or something, Id rather save a little longer and get a mark V. They are unbelievable rifles, very strong action, 9 locking lugs on magnum models, but they cost $$$ Weatherby is definitly a top notch rifle maker hands down!
My buddy's dad has one he picked up from backcountry sports at the RD sprotsman's show, chambered for 243 win.
For the $1100 I would find a few hundred more and get the MkV in Accumark and never look back

BTW i have a Japanese 300 Mk V that I bought with my first real pay cheque in 1978 - eventually put a Brown synthetic stock on and a muzzle break and recently a Near scope base (with cheap Weaver rings LOL) and it is STILL my go to rifle
- been overseas with it and all over western Canada
After many many many rounds it still is deadly accurate
pretty good for a Jap gun!
I wouldnt hesitate to get another -especially a Accumark with its stock and aluminum bedding block -- well worth it in my view
You will have that rifle till the day you die.

I own a Weatherby MK5 Accumark in .257 Mag , it has an Ziess Conquest scope on it , Fantastic rifle and shoots great groups , Accumarks are a bit expensive , but it will last a life time so i feel its worth the extra i spent on it.

Your right, I was responding to the post above mine that said "save some more money and.." That is where my comment came from about being in the same league as Sako.
I visit gun shops every day, I have never seen a stock with that much shine to it. I do believe it was semi custom, he had 4 with the same stock, different grain.
Last year when I bought my wifes CZ from him he had an Anshutz that looked very similar.
The laminate stainless vanguard is from Weatherbys custom catalog.
I own a Vanguard deluxe (looks just like a mark V) and I am very happy with it.
It shoots excellent 1" groups.
The trigger has creep however but it's not to bad.
Vanguards also come in non weatherby calibers so ammo price is a non issue.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for great value for a good shooter.

In my oppinion Weatherby is one of the few companies that doesn't seem to have one or two rotten eggs in its carton. In saying that though, I really can't come to terms with the Weatherby stock; I'm a classic stock kinda guy. I'm really contemplating a weatherby mark V ultralight in 270win.
