is x50 too big for mtn rifle..

i had a fixed 7x50 meopta artemis 2000 for shooting pigs at night without spotlight so only under the moon.

they have there utility depending on your hunting conditions it is not because you do not use them that they cant be used ...

A bit of a stretch. You'd turn down a 50 or 56mm Nightforce on your tactical rig? Or, as Phil says, for low-light Euro Swine Frapping?

Well, when you put it that way...I'm one of the huge number of shooters who will never own a "tactical rig", since my "tactics" are all related to shooting critters, not bad guys. But no, I wouldn't turn down a 56mm Nightforce if someone gave it to me. I'd just flog it on the EE to the mall-ninja/long-range crowd...:)

I'm speaking from the perspective of having actually bought and used a Trijicon 56mm-objective, 30mm-tubed monster-sized variable on one of my coyote guns. I used it for a season and sold it...just way too bulky. The fellow who bought it commented as soon as he received it how the sheer size of it caught him unawares. Yes, I know, a 1-inch 50mm hunting scope is not that extreme, but it just doesn't do anything meaningful for me.

If you live in Europe and can sit in a stand and snipe boars by the light of the moon, or in Oz where kangaroos can be shot at night from trucks or whatever, then these make sense to own IMHO. I don't and can't, so I won't. :)

Funny...I actually do consider ounces of weight and millimeters of diameter/height when choosing a hunting scope...and yet I unhesitatingly select a 30- or 32-inch heavy-barreled Sharps or Rolling Block single shot with a rear sight like a construction crane to hunt deer or yotes. To each his own! :)

excuse me? So I don't like big objectives...So what? I hunt with every rifle I own and 40mm is the tops for me. What do I know? Lol.you mean in general? Hope not, that would take all day to type and then some lol.

50mm is not a big objective .... not because you do not or do need doesnt mean everybody has to listen about what you know. over here we are lucky we can freely debate and even bringing real world experiences. your hunting conditions are not what the others are .... i have from 20mm to 40mm and variation in between now so you see i m not stuck on 40mm lol ...

I personally would not want a 50mm on a mountain rifle, as i find 32mm-40mm plenty for mountain game but to each his/her own

My Remington 700 .270 Winchester wore a 3-9x50 for about 8 years :D

shot the lot an wa a wonderful setup, but the 24 inch tube evened it out no problem at all...
yeah, maybe not quite Montana light, which would make the difference

here we are ... that lad had a x50 for 8 years and he just asked the question ....

Mountain terrain very so much On the BC coast wear alders grow horizontally on the slid paths any scope will hang up on the branches it is horrible and ther is no easy way to get up into the alpine other then on foot as the roads ore low in the valleys
This is wear a short ultralight rifle shines and any scope you put will be a pain the hard part is not going up it is getting back to the road with a heavy pack
