I've been eager to post photos of this for a while now but the way I had been hosting photos mysteriously quit working. After a few hours of fighting with software I am finally back in business. A friend of mine showed this to me a few years back. I had never seen one before and eventually we worked out a deal so it could live at my house. It is for carrying 4 artillery rounds at a time to feed the big guns. Dated 1917 with the British broad arrow mark. I mostly collect firearms and bayonets but this was too cool to pass up.

I gather keeping the trenches supplied in WW l was a very labor intensive activity, not conducive to wheeled transport or even horses at times.

Jerkins like this would have likely never entered a trench. The batteries were well behind the front line, even in some places firing from areas used for R&R for frontline soldiers on their rotation. Shells were delivered in some sectors by small gauge railway directly to the batteries, in others by horse (or mule or dog) and cart in wicker or leather capsules. Men dragging shells by the pair through acres of mud to feed desperately firing field guns is an interesting image but likely never happened. This sort of kit would most likely have been worn by men loading shells from transport to depot to transport to neat piles at a battery. Neat and rare piece OP, thanks for sharing!
