Is Zeiss the worse scope?

I have been proud to have a Zeiss on my rifle, it is a conquest 3x9 40mm. But tonight, I did a comparison. I have a calendar on my kitchen wall. I looked through Zeiss, old Leupold(m8 4x) and an even older perma center 4x. The later 2 were as clear as each other, but Zeiss gave me blurry image! Unbelievable

I set Zeiss mag at 4 as well. So the result was so disappointing. I wonder whether my Zeiss is broken or something(my son let it slid on to the ground from leaning against my truck on one of my hunting trip). But the glass are all intact. So the blur of image is hard to explain.

The only positive thing is Zeiss's reticle is thick and clear.

across the kitchen.... tasco might be more clear than Zeiss in perfect settings for that. Go out side and do comparison on both short and longest distance. (do it when its darker outside)

For fixed scope.. lets say 10x40.. it will blur your eyes right at 25-50 yards. at 100 + it will be clear as a whisle.

Another question is did you turn the eye relief to your eye settings on both scopes?

Maybe that is the reason? I only looked from the other end of the kitchen.

I am a total "know nothing" about optics. Is fixed scope good for short distance?

Fixed power or variable, what is more important for short distance is that the magnification isn't too great. If you aren't shooting at a great variety of ranges the simplicity of a fixed power can be nice.

Variable power used to be a complexity that lead to failures that made fixed power scopes preferable for reliability, but modern good quality variable power scopes are very reliable.

Make sure the focus is set right. This is the ring you turn near the magnification ring. It should be the eyepiece. Look at the sky (not the sun) and adjust it so the reticle is clear. Don't overdue it.

The other reason as mentioned in the post above is parralax. Indoors at 20 yards the max magnification I can use is 5-6x on a 3-9x scope. Anything over that is fuzzy. The scope is set for parralax at 100 yards. If a scope has a 75 or 50 setting it will be clear at higher magnification at shorter range. This is why all rimfire target rifles being shot at 25 yards have scopes with adjustable parralax. Indoors Ill shoot my Kimber or Walther at 20 yards using 20x and it's clear. The Leupold EFR scope is designed for this and you can set parralax to extremely close ranges.

What you're experiencing is most likely this. The Conquest glass is excellent. They're good scopes.

Is the Zeiss worst? Only for your wallet (when buying)!

Check them all out in challenging conditions and see what the results are. I think you'll find at low lights levels / early morning / sunset in clear sky conditions the Zeiss shows its class. Plus, try owning one ofr 20+years of good use, and you'l really appreciate the build quailty.

Candocad.

For hunting in the kitchen, I tend to prefer a Tasco scope in either 4x or 3-9x. Very vesatile, whether for elk next to the refrigerator or deer under the dinette. The same scopes work okay in the basement, but we have the occasional cape buffalo herd down there in the family room, so I prefer to stick with lower magnification scopes for that use in case I have to stop a charge.

If you actually go outside with your gun, Leupolds and Zeiss seem to have a slight edge in optical quality.:dancingbanana:

The Conquest line are an economy based scope. They are the bottom of the Zeiss lineup.

If you are unimpressed with it and are looking to get rid of it I can put it on a .22 or pellet gun if you would like to be rid of it. :D

ok that was really funny, put a smile on my face...ive owned alot of scopes, zeiss, leupold, swarovski, bushnell, tasco, redfield etc.....imo the very high end zeiss, swarovski etc 1500$ plus scopes are the best, then the conquest, then leupold..after those who cares?

Is your Zeiss set for Island time or PST?? Island time will make it appear fuzzy and unclear for sure................
