As the title says, my Israeli K98 bolt will not close on the 3rd round. It can go down around half way down and stops. It use to have problems opening the bolt after a few rounds and a spent shell would be stuck in there, I cured that by putting a bore brush on a drill. Can anyone help me fix this rifle? I have tried different types if ammo in it an it all has thr same result.

I wonder if anyone has looked carefully into the care and quality of materials used in building these 7.62 Israeli Mausers. Also the quality and previous use of the actions that were employed. I had one that I bought years ago for not much and sold it on a few years ago for what I paid. I explained my reservations and reason for the low price but the buyer wanted it more for historical purposes than for shooting.

As CanadianAR mentioned, the Israeli K98k's are made up of a large variety of manufactures including German, Czech, and FN. Any rebarreled to 7.62 used Israeli made barrels of excellent quality. Most shoot very well. I don't think there can be any question as to the quality of the parts used to make them but more so in the mixing and matching of components from different makers, etc.,that causes issues. Most Israelis out there don't have matching numbers from their refurb so it's possible to end up with issues due to tolerance stacking and differences in manufacture from one maker to the other.

Not sure what the op has going on with his rifle but it could be a chamber issue or headspace. Rust? Build up of dirt/debris?

Did you try another Complete Bolt Assembly?

As I understand it, the barrels for the 7.62x51 Israeli Mausers were manufactured by Fabrique Nationale.

Maybe a problem with eating .308 win over x51 ball due to higher pressure might have caused damage?

Why does this keep circulating on the internet? With the exception of wall thickness these rds are for all intenets and purposes identical. The difference will never be an issue in any K98 action.

Brass looks fine after shooting, the rifle was made by the czechs, bolt matches receiver. I will try to get it headspaced sometime Soon

Info I have read says the Israelis purchased a complete set of tooling to mfg the 98k..but soon changed over to build the 7.62 ..It does not say however if the machinery was operated by FN techs or packed up and sent to Israel...Considering the variety of recievers seen that have been converted, it would seem that the tooling did go to Israel ?...

FN on top, German rework on the bottom. FN did make complete K98's for Israel in a one time contract, they have the IDF crest on top of receiver and are marked fabrique national on the side of the receiver. All 7.62 barrels were made by Israel starting in 1956 and the rifles were reworked from 8mm to 7.62mm in Israeli arsenals. Even that FN in the picture has an Israeli barrel stamped 58.

The reason for the switch was after Israel adopted the FN-FAL they reworked the Mausers for ammuniton commonality for reserve units (who were issued the old 98K's).

If a 98 mauser is having problems like this, it is a bad day and warrants a trip to the gunsmith. It is a hell of a strong action but OP do yourself a favor and get it looked at.

Well, pressure is NOT an issue. 7.62X51mm and .308 run the SAME pressure range. The difference in numbers is due to the values of P.S.I. and C.U.P. And the 98 was made for 7.92 mauser. That round has as high or higher breach pressure in many factory loadings (except U.S. commercial ammo)

Interesting to read the various views. I am unconvinced that these Mausers were anything but quickly cobbled together odds and ends that were bought cheap/scrounged from various sources post war. I would be very surprised if at the time they were assembled that the Israeli's even had much industrial capacity to produce a quality barrel either. Who knows for sure? Would sure be interested in reading some accurate Israeli "period" information about their production. My version was not all that accurate and was a real mix master of parts. I am certainly impressed with the amount people ask for them when being sold though.

Are you trying to load each round one at time or are you placing all rounds in the internal magazine prior to closing the action?
