I have recently picked up an old sportered Israeli Mauser from my brother in law, its a Czech K98, in German style with the handguard ahead of the rear sight. Im planning to do as close to a full restore as i can once i have the money. It was converted to 308 sometime in the past and when loaded seems to operate fine till you get to the last round in the mag. When the bolt comes back the number 4 round ejects and the fifth pops out of the mag and fall on the ground, iv taken the rifle apart, cleaned it up, and inspected it for anything obvious to my untrained eye. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this, and how to fix it, id like to solve it myself before going to a smith if i can. Thanks for any help.

Here's a couple pics,

A different follower perhaps? Some are made with different widths and tapers to them and that may help. Sounds like the distance between the follower and feed rails on the receiver is a little excessive.

Israeli K98k's are almost always a mix and match of all sorts of mauser parts. Sometimes you end up with a rifle that doesn't function very well due to tolerance stacking and the mixing of parts from various models, calibers, etc.

It was my friends fathers hunting rifle for years, so maybe he never noticed it before, i fired a few tounds last year when my friend still owned it, and it seemed to work fine. Its why i found it odd that it should start doing it now.

Yeah looks like the follower is wore down enough that it won't hold that last one in. I pulled the follower out of my husky 3006 ans tried it, worked fine. An suggestions where I could get another one??

Trade-Ex has them for sure.

Lots of guys on here have them in their spares bins, too.

(I NEVER thought I'd end up quoting the Bible in a GUN FORUM!!!)

Right on I'll keep mY eyes open, I can always use the follower out of my husky for the time being. Still working on finding decent paying work in AB, on my fifth new job in the past 6 months hoping this one sticks and is worth keeping.
