Is there a way to tell the difference in the different generations? I've heard the second and now third runs of these are better than the first. I handled one today and the flip up sights looked different than the original type.

Big concern is whether or not the gremlin of light strikes has been resolved. Or if other issues have popped up.
 
Apparently if the production date is later than May 2012 the firearm is considered 2nd generation. Mine was manufactured in June 2012 and I'm quite satisfied.
 
I'd totally buy one, but Ived stayed away because I heard it was a flimsy stock, which was prone to light strikes/misfires
 
The one I shouldered today felt as good as any other folding stock. I'm not much of a fan for folding stocks though so take that for what it is. My only hesitation sits with the initial run not performing as well as it should, misfire and light strike wise.

Funny how when things get fix, the good never makes more noise then the bad.
 
Mine has been great! I've had countless days of 500 plus rounds, with very little failures. Out of the box it worked as well as an out of the box 10/22. During cleaning I would preform the mods that were being talked about on this and other forums. Some mods made it work better, some not so much. I really enjoyed the process of working on my own rifle, and the time spent getting to know it, has been well spent. I only shoot bulk cci blazer, and the only failures I have are ammo related, no light primer strikes, no failures to feed, no stovepipes. I would confidently say mine, after all mods, runs at 98% . When I do have a round not go off, It is a dead round, not a light primer strike. This forum is full of people complaining about the 10/22 reliability out of the box, heaps of stickies on mods to make it better, and still people love it. The issc was released with a few problems, and people have been lynching it from day one. Why are people so willing to tinker with a 10/22 but not the issc? There, I just made some noise about the good that is in this rifle. Take it how you please. I just hope people can see this post through the burning torches.

i love my issc scar as well, it did take some tinkering (pretty much just the washer mod, and i removed the mag safety, it just makes life alot easier if you get a dud, and centerfires dont have mag safeties), but having a rimfire with the nice things a centerfire rifle does is so much more fun than a boring 10/22 that sucks out of the box anyways. just because the 10/22 has been around forever doesnt mean its a good gun.
 
Mine was manufactured June 2012. The flip-up sights are slightly different...I prefer them to the Gen 1 sights. I've put 1000 rds through it, most of that fired in -20C* conditions. I had maybe 10 failures to extract, other than that it runs like a top. I haven't cleaned it yet...looks like a bit of a pain to break it down for a serious scrubdown :(
 
I think the different generation thing is a myth. I bought one from May 2012 and it was crap out of the box. Sent it back and got a new one from Sept 2012 and it was exactly the same. Light strikes every 4 or 5 rounds. After a few fixes it shoots like a champ. One of my favorite guns to shoot. Definitely give it the thumbs up to buy but be prepared to break it down to get it workin right.
 
Well it looks like we might have the ball rolling about the good side of this rifle. I really hope this keeps up. IF YOU OWN AN ISSC RIFLE, AND ARE HAPPY WITH IT, PLEASE POST. The tear down is not that bad, and can be made better with the hk/gsg 5 push pins, I am still trying to source these myself ( cant find anyone willing to ship to canada )

I like mine, after I "home gunsmith"ed the crap out of it to get it to work reliably. ;) I should mention that mine is definitely the "first gen" version.

Would I buy one knowing that I would have so much trouble getting it running? Dunno. It's a LOT of fun to shoot, but getting it to work was a PITA for sure.

While I agree with you that there were some trials and tribulations with this rifle at first. What needs to be done to make it a very reliable shooter is now very well documented. If you were to buy a second one, all mods could be preformed during the first initial clean-up and maybe take you a couple hours. Now having said that, would you still be on the fence?

Do you, or have you owned one? a 10/22 with a black rifle stock will be just as much money, and still need tweaking. There are enough threads with you one-line nay-sayers already. If you own/owned one and have done all the mods correctly, and it still does not work, please post your results, and one of us can lead you in a way to get it running.

I've done extensive research on it last year and decided not to waste my time and money on it. Reviews are unanimous on this rifle.

Last year this rifle was still fairly new, I will not deny the issues that were apparent at that time. I actually own this rifle, and due to the very help full people on this and other forums, all known issues have been addressed. I cannot speak for the supposed gen 2, I own one of the terrible gen 1's. I have never heard of a semi auto rimfire that runs perfectly out of the box at anywhere near this price. Being a rimfire, it will never run 100%, especially because I run bulk ammo. I am one of the best reviewers you can ask for because I own the rifle. I did not borrow it, not like the way it ran, and give it a bad review. I was stuck with it, worked out the problems ( with help from others like myself ) and have come out the other side with a very fun, reliable, non-restricted, evil black rifle. I am speaking up now, because I am tired of the bad reviews and comments from people that do not KNOW. The reviews are unanimous? there is a thread on this vary forum that asks if an owner would buy again knowing the problems and it was 50/50. and that thread was started before all the kinks were worked out.

Yeah, to be fair, when I got mine, a lot of the fixes weren't really documented well yet. I fixed my rifle piecemeal based on ideas from various forums and my own tinkering.

If I had a brand new one in my hands right now, I could do all the mods necessary to get it up and running in 2 hours or so, less if I don't need to file down the firing pin, since I've done it once and I've taken the thing apart so many times that I can probably disassemble and reassemble the bolt blindfolded. :p But for someone who hasn't worked on one of these specific rifles before, it would obviously take a little longer the first time they do it, even with a step-by-step how-to guide online.

I absolutely love my MK22, one of my favourite guns to shoot, but it took a lot of love to get it to that point. Regardless of how well-documented the process is, it shouldn't be necessary to have to fix major problems with a factory-new gun.

Now that you mention this, I believe I might have hijacked this thread. OP had asked how well of a shooter the gen 2 is out of the box, sorry fenceline.

No its fair. I'd prefer insight from shooters and those that had to tinker. I've read a bunch on the first ones that came out having problems and heard the latest "2nd gen" had been improved. Just wondering if the improved newer ones were actually holding up to that review.
 
Have both 1st and 2nd Gen.
No major problems with either one, striker spring mod on 1st Gen to cure FTF.
I've Take these rifles apart from top to bottom in every way possible. compared to other 22LR carbines I've taken apart...I like the MK22!!! in how it handles and how it's manufactured.
