ISSC Owner's Question

Would you buy an ISSC again? (Knowing what you do now about the rifle)

I wanted to get an answer from ISSC owners or ex-owners only. I was thinking of getting one but I have heard a lot of mixed reviews. So what I want to know is:

1.) Are you happy with the rifle?

2.) If your rifle has issues what were they?

3.) Would you buy this rifle again, knowing what you do now?

I really want empirical experiences and not interweb rumors or stories, so if you haven't owned one, feel free to comment but please don't answer the poll.

When I bought mine it was great. After about 200 or so rounds it started to have light primer hits. The serial number mine had was the prefix A411. You can check out the experiences I had in the rimfire section. I eventually got a full refund only because it had an out of battery discharge.

I've only had mine out 3 times so far, so I haven't fully formed an opinion of it yet.

Range Trip #1 - Only put about 50 rounds through it on the first trip; had 7 FTE-type failures (stovepipes and double-feeds). VERY accurate. Took gun home and cleaned/oiled it.

Range Trip #2 - HORRIBLE. Every 2nd or 3rd round was a FTE or FTF. A lot of the FTE were cases where it couldn't even START removing the round from the chamber -- had to take a flat-head screwdriver to lever them out. Completely pissed at the gun. Took gun home, stripped it, detail-cleaned everything, and only applied the barest amount of oil in the chamber.

Range Trip #3 - Put about 250 rounds through it. Definitely started off MUCH better than trips #2 and #3; a few FTF/FTE, but not too bad (less than trip #1 as a % of shots fired). VERY accurate. FTF/FTE and accuracy problems got worse as the day went on. Not anywhere near as bad as trip #2, though. Noticed lots of light primer strikes. Near the end of the day, discovered that my top tails (i.e. the one holding my optic!) had come loose. Went home, stripped it, cleaned it, and tightened up all the rail screws with LocTite. Some Googling re: light primer strikes also led me to tighten up and LocTite a bolt inside at the rear.

I'm hoping that tightening up and LocTiting all the screws/bolts will really help. The problems on Trip #2 were definitely caused by over-oiling -- the MK22 really, REALLY doesn't like anything more than the thinnest possible layer you can put on, and ONLY in the chamber. Don't oil anything in the trigger group.

The only other annoyance that I've had so far is the hollow stock -- you get a "ringing" sound with every shot. I actually just (last night) picked up a pack of polyester batting and packed the stock with it. I'm hoping that this fixes that problem.

I'm hoping to bring it out to the range sometime this weekend with all the fixes to see how it runs. I'll post back with updates.
 
alter: You shouldn't be shooting with oil/lube in the chamber, barrel or boltface. Not good for the gun or yourself.

Sounds like there seems to be some issues with this rifle. It would be nice to know if it is magazine or firearm related.
 
I have had mine out twice only had a couple stovepipes using cheap bulk .22lr, considering selling it(not sure yet) only because I don't see myself usin it much since I have 10/22 target model that is a little more my style

I wiped the chamber/boltface with a dry patch before starting, but it seems like oil seeped into somewhere that the gun didn't like during the ~week it was stored. I'll know more once I play with it a few more times, but it seems MUCH more sensitive to even slight over-oiling than most guns I've used.

I have 6 mags for it, and cycled through all of them during my 3rd range trip, and I had the same problems with all of them. Pretty sure it's not a mag issue.
 
I have probably less than 2 bricks of ammo through mine, a mixed bag of 15 or so different loads just looking for the good and the bad in this particular gun. I've had 5 or 6 FTE's, including one stovepipe, that seemed to be ammo-related (all occurred with the same 2 loads) but it's not exactly a conclusive test. Several screws, mostly the ones holding the rails on, needed lock-titing and tightening right out of the box, but nothing has loosened since then. I hated the sights and replaced them. Most shooting has been with a scope. Accuracy has been acceptable with almost all loads...lots of cheap loads will do less than an inch at 50 yards. Rem Subsonics (a favourite of mine in several of my guns) shoot very well and cycle the action reliably.

No major complaints. I'm not so much in love with it that I would swear to keep it forever, but I'll be hanging on and playing with it for at least the foreseeable future.
 
The poll is what I'd expect so far...kinda 50/50.
Was out with a buddy and his ISSC and there was a 50% FTF and FTE.
It's been long since sent back for warranty.
But on the other hand, another buddy of mine has been running a flawless model.
 
Looking at the poll. Do you really want to chance a gun that appears to be 50/50?

Don't risk it.

Buy Ruger SR-22 Tactical w/ threaded barrel and be done. There is a reason so many people have the Ruger 10/22. It works and the aftermarket parts are everywhere.
 
about 900 rnds through mine now with less than a dozen jams. I'm very happy with it. I'm using Federal Champion cheap bulk ammo, and it seems to be allmost flawless. Any .22 semi is prone to jamming if its not kept perfectly clean. Do not oil the bolt face and keep the extractor brushed clean. If you were to buy one, DO check the bolts #108 and lock tite if necessary. These were both tight and secure on mine after the first 200 rnds or so. I did have to tighten all the other allan bolts a couple of times, but now the seem to stay tight. All in all, this is a very fun gun to shoot, and I would recomend it to a friend.
 
Wow, I wasn't expecting the poll to be so close. I appreciate the answers that you guys put up. I am pretty surprised that a rifle that is 600+ bucks has such mixed reviews.

I really liked the ambi controls on the ISSC and the push button mag release but in the end I went with the more dependable rifle.

I agree. A pimple on an otherwise very nice stock. I was hoping it articulated so I could remove the lever and replace it with a plain bolt but its just molded on. Uck. The stock does have a nice feel to it and the quality is there. I shake my head at the fire select switch as well.

I wonder if any one had tried to grind it off without making too big a mess of it?

Try many ammo and always the same problem
clean lube dry anyway always the same thing : light primer hits
 
POS in functionality, finish and warranty.

Light primer hits, failure to extract, fail to eject. Finish started flaking after 6 weeks.

ISSC unreachable or simply ignored emails. North Sylva refused to do anything about the finish stating it was NOT covered under warranty.

Run away from this gun. Your money is better spent elsewhere.
 
use cci minimags and it cycles just fine. also gotta be carefull loading the magazine, make sure that they sit perfect against the back of it.
had problems with cheap ammo but the better stuff fixed the problem
 
well ive just purchased the issc scar .22and i love it, i have fired about 600 rounds threw it and the only time i had any problems was some crappy ammo and that was the cause of my FTE... i blame it on crappy ammo because all my semi auto .22 have done this with thunderbolt remington ammo. i switched to federal today and it purred like a putty tat! i love this rifle and i will never get rid of it., but if i do run into these issues i will let you all know.
