ISSC Rifle... very disappointing!

Well, I'm both happy and sad now.

Happy to report the gun is working very well with rarely any misfires or jams.

The bad news is the finish is starting to come off the upper. Today I thought there was a little gunk in a crease and tried to scrape it out with my thumbnail. Instead of gunk it is the finish peeling off of it. A big strip came off with my thumbnail. Upon closer examination I see that there are other areas where it is starting to flake as well.

I'll be contacting the retailer and see what action will be taken. Might want to check yours if you have one. The finish should not be coming off like this. Looks like plain old paint over aluminum.

Dont kinow if you've cleaned it yet but this is the warning on ISSC's Webpage.

NOTICE - Do not use BreakFree Powder Blast to clean M22 pistols. This cleaning agent reacts against the aluminum in any gun slide and will discolor or flake off the finish.

Mine has a small area where the finish scraped off but its relatively hidden...was not aware that this was an issue with this gun. I have never used BreakFree.

Farmer brought his ISSC in a few weeks ago and I got to plink away with it a bit. First 2 shots were a FTF but that may have been due to the magazine not being seated properly. We couldn't find anything wrong, and I ran 2 full magazines through without issue (Farmer about the same). I believe we ran Winchester ammo.

If memory recalls, Farmer had tightened everything down per the suggestions - so it shot seamlessly. It's been literally ages since I've shot a .22LR and I'd forgotten what a riot they are to shoot!

There are things with the rifle that I'm not a fan of. The stock in particular - absolute crap. And the inability to replace the pistol grip is disappointing. A few other minor quirks (safety, etc.) - but nothing to really fixate on. My overall opinion is that it's a fun little rifle to shoot for $600, but that being said - the price tag is readily apparent all over the gun. It's too bad they didn't address some of the issues with quality, because a better-constructed and manufactured gun would have easily been worth $100-$200 more.

The only cleaning I've done is Hoppes #9 in the bore. Mine is flaking down near where it joins the lower close to the stock.

It is also starting to chip around the ejection port, presumably where brass gets snagged on the rare jam.

Not impressed with the quality of the finish at all. Maybe mine is an exception...

Don't know the active ingredient in Breakfree. Might be common to other cleaners.I agree that the finish should not come off that easily but Maybe the finish flaking will inspire some cool custom paint schemes !

$700 for a gun with the paint flaking off after 1 month is not inspiring confidence in me.

I have a call and emails in to North Sylva and we'll see how this gets handled.

Well, I actually sent mine in for "service". It is almost 30 days and no reply from the retailer or distributor.

Out for round two yesterday at the indoor range. I put about 200 hundred round rounds of winchester dynapoint value box through the rifle. Ran good for sighting, second grouping I got lucky, was about the size of a dime. After sighting I moved to rapid fire and double taps had a couple FTE's and only one light strike all day. Went back to well aimed shots and ended on high note with my last shot a perfect bull.

Hi Lou,

We are getting to work on your rifle. We have just been waiting for our parts shipment to come in from ISSC which we received last week.
Shouldn’t be too much longer!

Thanks for your patience.

Was this reply from the dealer or North Sylva ?

Interesting to see your finish is peeling as well, Hammer. Is this a new problem for you?

It would be one of the issues, but I believe it to be a solvent issue(M-Pro7). I do recall Para Ordnance(pistols) had a similar issue with their finishes back in the day. All in all, I will be selling this firearm when it returns from service.
