I having an issue with loading 45 acp on a Dillon 650 xl. When I did the initial set up I loaded a couple of hundred rounds no problem. Then what started happing is every 3rd Round loaded would not fit in the Dillon case check unless you really pressed hard down and you needed to use something do hammer it back out. I started to think maybe it was glock bulged cases , but I could not see a bulge. I then ran a bunch through just the sizer die and they all fit in the case gage. but once I load them every 3rd one does not fit. I checked my seating depth an it is bang on 1.250 and I tried playing with the crimp making it crimp more and it does not alleviate the issue. Do I have two much crimp to start ? if so why would it affect only every 3rd or 4th round.
I am using Cam pro 230 grn bullets. I have saved some of the rounds and I can try and take some picks and upload them? I have never encountered this with all my years of loading on a single stage press.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is over crimping because some cases are a tad long. The Dillon has lots of die positions. I use the seater die to seat only and then a Lee Factory Crimp die to take the flare off the case. It works regardless of case length.

Do you find the lee die does a better job than the Dillon crimping die ? I have a lee crimping die but I have never used it funny enough ? I always had success with my Rcbs set on a single stage press.
Thank you , it looks like it may be a crimping issue then?

It doesn't do a better job but some people prefer the Lee FCD which will swage the round so it will pass. If you've setup your dies properly there should be no need for special dies.

It's hard to look like anything without pictures, lol, but it's likely too much crimp or the projectile isn't being seated concentrically. What's the crimp measurement of a completed round? Remember, you shouldn't actually be crimping that round, think of it as de-belling.

Interesting I never though about the projectile not being seated properly. I do find with the Dillon the flaring varies depend on the brass. Especially when using mixed head stamped. I have to be honest I have always struggled with how to measure the crimp properly, what is the best way to measure the crimp ?

Caliper at the case mouth of a completed round. You should be just under .473 if I recall correctly. Shoot for .471 and see if they gauge correctly.

The problem with over crimping is that you create a ring of bulge, for lack of a better description, similar to an aging men's spare tire.

Aaaaa ok thank you I am gonna check them when I get home I have not pulled the ones that have not fit yet.
Thanks for all the info , you are never to old to learn :)
