Went out shooting today with a friend put about 40 rounds into the mp9 then played around with my duelies, then a bit with my sks.

After wanting to shoot some more with my MP9 as my friend was looking at buying one it stopped shooting. :(
First thing I thought was a ftf after the 2nd round that never fired I took the gun apart and noticed a piece broke on it somehow. Here's a image of it.

Image is to big, I'm lazy too resize it because you can't notice the issue.

It's the piece that brings back the firing pin.
Sad panda. :(
Still wonder why, and how it broke.

Getting a replacement striker shouldn't be a problem.

Contact M.D. Charlton, or Brownells, to order a striker assembly.

Hmmm...that's suspicious...

Looks like I'm not the only one with this issue. :(
Still trying ti figure out how it broke in the first place, really would hate to spend the $30 or what not and have it happen again.

Anyone here have an idea how something like this might have happen?

I've read about it at the mp-pistol froum, do a search for "broken striker" and you find some posts.

I have the m&p9 and been lucky so far. My wife does arts and crafts and she has the neccessary marterials to make silicone molds and plastic casting compound. I think it's time to take apart my M&P9 and make some extra strikers with her mold and casting materials.

The striker is a part that has a finite life span, sort of like a timing belt in a car. Technically it should last about the same length of time as the recoil spring and be replaced at the same time (5,000-8,000). There were some issues with the striker breaking on early production guns, but that was the nose piece of the striker, not the cocking piece. This is the first time I've seen a picture of the cocking piece broken. The replacement part costs about $45 and should available from your closest Smith warranty depot - just get the part (a monkey could install it). If you did any trigger work to the last one, it'll need re-doing on the new one (ie. your trigger pull will feel different).

The striker assembly is simple and easy to fix. It is the weak point on the m&p. Forcing the action apart while stripping the upper off is enough to do it. The back plate slides off like most striker fired actions depress the locking pin...and out it comes.

Hmmm 5000, to 8000 rnds, interesting...... I guess I should order some parts, I'm over 7K since January when I got it....... and it was used then!

I havn't had a problem with mine yet, I'd call S&W, they may just send you out the parts.....

I know I'll be firing off an email shortly.... :D

Cheers!

When did you buy your M&P? Some earlier strikers were defective.
Did you do a lot of dry-firing?
Did you do a lot of field-strips by pulling the trigger instead of using the sear deactivation lever?

Todd on the mp-pistol.com has fired more than 60,000 rounds through a M&P9 and striker leg didn't break.

This seems to be and increasing problem with Smith and Wessons auto pistol line. I would contact them(for what its worth) and notify them of this and request a new part under warranty.

Bought the gun used, was told it had only 50 rounds into it.

I've put in about 1000 give or take a bit, don't really do much dry firing with it and always used the lever when taking it apart.

I sent a email to mdcharlton but they want me to send in the gun for that tiny piece..

Would rather have it shipped to me and pay for the part since shipping would be the same price.
I'll send them a email tonight and see if I can just get the piece shipped out to me.
