Hey everyone so I took my SVT out the other day for the 2nd time, had cleaned after last use, worked flawlessly, however at the range would not fire. I have gone through the whole gun while looking at youtube videos to see what might be the issue. For whatever reason the hammer is not releasing onto the firing pin, with rounds in or dry fire. Has anyone else experienced this issue, or know how to fix it?

I'd tear it down completely and look for signs of some part that's missing or broken, especially in the trigger group. If it worked fine before you stripped and cleaned it, either you didn't put something back together correctly or something broke and you missed it. Go look at the svt40 sticky at the top of the red rifles section, it contains very thorough pic by pic reference to stripping and cleaning the svt40.

Hammer is not being released is one issue. When u chamber first round make sure you pull back the bolt carrier handle and then let the spring do the job, do not assist bolt carrier in its forward movement. Check that bolt carrier fully closed. If smallest gap between bolt carrier and chamber trigger group will not allow release of the hammer - for your own safety.
Second probable issue is hammer striking but shot is not fired. Remove the bolt, check if firing ping is not brocken or damaged. When you press it from behind it should easily move and stick out for about 2-3 mm I think. If u are at range check if there is trace of firing pin strike on the primer.

Tear it down and post some pictures of your trigger assembly, someone on here may be able to have a look at it and tell you if something is wrong. I'm not sure of the technical term, but there is a safety catch on the hammer, and if the catch release is broken the hammer won't release when you pull the trigger.
Hope this helps.

In the trigger group on the left front corner is a small lever called the disconnector that needs to be depressed by the bolt when it is completely closed and in battery.
If you take the trigger group out you can depress it with the thumb of your left hand while you pull the trigger with your right hand, the hammer should fall,if it does not something is defective in the triiger assembly.
There is some very good video's on Youtube about a complete disassmbly and reassembly into the smallest details of the SVT 40.

good luck,

Herman

Further to M1's comments, if you remove the trigger group you may have noticed that you can only release the hammer if you depress a small curved lever at the front of the group while pulling the trigger (watch your fingers). The rod alluded to by M1 pushes down on this lever when the bolt is fully locked (carrier is fully forward). Test the separated trigger group first then move on from there. It's a pretty simple mechanism and you should be able to figure out what's wrong.

The interrupter works by depressing a small (~3mm diameter) pin only when the bolt and carrier are locked (ready to fire). The pin can be easily damaged if you try to install the trigger group after you have installed the bolt and carrier. You can remove the trigger group first during dis-assembly but it should always be installed before the bolt and carrier.

Remove the trigger group and look into the mag well from the underside. Move the bolt back and forth from the battery position and you can observe the action of this element of the interrupter.

I have to beat the #### out of my trigger guard with a mallet even after it clicks in to get everything functioning. Have you tried showing it who's boss?

thanks for all the advice guys! got it running, turns out I had not fully screwed in the receiver for the gas rod causing it to extend into the breach stopping the beech from fully closing. Definatly helped having all the advice, especially Horilka who explained breach not fully closed stops the hammer from striking
