Hello,

I just purchased a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-2C and I believe its a lemon. Sad since it is my first purchase of Vortex optics. Which, brings me to my question.

1) At 6x power, I noticed that there is a shadow on the top and bottom edges (12&6 o'clock) with eye relief and parallax set properly.

2)This shadow gets worst and occupies more of the sight picture when elevation adjustment is at the top and/or bottom 5 mils. Yes, 5 mils. Thats one full turn at top and/or bottom range of the elevation adjustments.

3)At 24x power. Turning elevation and/or windage adjustment from one extreme end to another, I also noticed that my cross hair will move very so slightly in the direction of the turrets. Ex. Up on elevation. Cross hair will move up pass the mid point.

Does anyone have experience with this scope who can tell me if this is normal behavior with a high power ffp scope? I really do believe this scope is a lemon. Its depressing since it is my first Vortex and already I am running into issues.

Thanks everyone. Input is much appreciated.

If you just purchased it, return it to the shop you bought it from. If you bought it from a reputable dealer it will be an easy exchange.

I assume you purchased this online?

I brought this from a Calgary local dealer. I don't believe they take refunds. Thanks everyone, I will call the shop and see if they will take it back.

Many scopes have shadows at the lowest magnification, Also, did you properly mount everything comfortably to your rifle in your shooting position?

Also, did you adjust the diopter?

I brought this from a Calgary local dealer. I don't believe they take refunds. The shop said they would be happy to help me send it back to Vortex if there is a problem with the scope.

I called Vortex Canada but was redirected to someone's cell phone voicemail in which I cannot leave a message cause it full. (Not too impressed)

I also called Vortex USA. And they have informed me that is is normal behaviour for their scopes since they don't have a limiter built into their scopes. What I'm seeing is the erector tube? If this is the case then I'm not a happy camper. So pretty much its normalfor this scope that is limited to 16-24 power and losing 5 mils of elevation from top and bottom. So pretty much I spent close to 1500 dollars for a 16-24x (instead of 6-24x) scope with 10mrad of elevation adjustment (instead of 19mrad) as advertised.

Do any one have the same scope which they can confirm or deny this? Vortex says its normal?

If you put almost any optic (not including very high end optics) on its lowest setting, you can get shadow or ghosting.
It usually goes away if you put the magnification up a tiny bit... 7x should not have any shadow.

Like I said... did you adjust the diopter?

Yes, diopter set proper. Parallax set proper. At 6x, The shadow can get so bad that it can take up to half the sight picture if at the top/bottom 5mils elevation adjustment. At 6x, elevation set to dead middle range, I still loose about 10%ish at top. This one here doesn't really go away until 12x plus power. I have to look thru the scope at an angle from the top. All in which Vortex states is normal. What I am seeing is the Erector tube.

I do have other scopes which I have seen this but none that is this bad.

That is definitely a defective optic then. Very weird.

Thanks again everyone for the input. Just thought everyone would like an update.
I have spoken with Vortex Canada and US. I also spoken with another owner with the same scope and has come to the knowledge that the mentioned "issue" only effects the FFP version of the PST#6-24x50. According to Vortex, this is normal operations for this specific scope. Also a known complaint.

If I knew this was an issue with this scope, I would have never even consider buying it. The local shop would not take it back and issue a refund either. They would gladly help me send it back to Vortex for repairs but it seems like there is nothing to repair since its normal for this specific scope. What can I say? I am very disappointed to have spent 1500 dollars on this scope. Wish that Vortex would let people know about this so consumers can make a knowledgeable purchase.

I have that same scope with no noticeable issues, strange indeed.

Vortex said "under most normal shooting conditions you will not notice it too much. When you dial to the top 5 mils, you are zoomed in to 16-24x power anyways making a long shot (which is true). With a 20 moa cant to the scope, you won't hit the bottom 5 mils." But when I ask "what if I decide to cant it 30moa so I can utilize more of the turrets?" They replied, that's just normal operations and I should use the scope 9x or higher. That basically means that I spent 1500 dollars on a scope that i can not use the wide end of the zoom. Disappointed indeed.

I will try and set up arrangements to have vortex inspect the scope anyways. See if there is an defect or not.
