Issue with VZ58

Loosing faith in humanity one post at a time.

Instead of messing with it may I suggest sending to Wolfgang at Wolverine Supplies and I would bet he would fix it up and ship it back to you in a hurry.

I actually spoke to him already and that's exactly what he suggested. I guess its my first weapon I had so many issues with right from the start.

Don't let it get to you. Many of my guns needed some kind of tweaking to make function 100% every time. It's just the way it is. I've had similar issues and Wolfgang was great. It'll come back to you the way you want it. :ar15:

I purchased a CZ 858 from Wanstalls and had the exact same issue.

I took it back and their gunsmith had a look at the rifle and confirmed that it was faulty.

Being a good bunch of guys over there they just switched it for another 858 with which I have not had a single jam with over 1000 rounds.

Instead of trying to fix this issue yourself I suggest you try contacting the store you bought the rifle from and seeing if they will exchange it for you.

How nice of you!!!

What I ment is I bought a Czech made CZ-858( surplus riffle with newly manifacture semi reciver) and I am glad I did not purchase a us mad Cezech small arm as they seem to have a couple of problem with them.

nice people....

We know what you meant. The guys got a problem with his rifle and is asking for help not your opinion on what your glad you didn't buy and that fact that it sucks to be him. That was derogatory.

If the highlighted portion of your post means "US made Czech Small Arms" then you'd be wrong.

The CSA guns are manufactured in the Czech Republic.

Crazy_Merc and I bought our VZ-58 carbines within a few hours of each other from the same store (last two in stock). Immediately there were a couple of differences noted between the carbines. Mine had an extended mag release already installed and had the fully enclosed front sight, Crazy_Merc's had the regular factory mag release and the open "donkey ear" style front sight (one of the ears was also bent).

However, all that aside, I had already assumed that putting a CZ extended mag release on the VZ would solve the issue of the CZ mags not fitting correctly and so far this seems to be the case, I have 6 CZ mags and 2 VZ mags and all of them feed flawlessly with steel cased surplus ammo.

I took one of the mags from my carbine that had just fed 5 rounds just fine and Crazy_Merc loaded 5 rounds of his Privi-Partizan brass cased ammo into the mag and had a FTF on the second round. So, will all else being equal it makes sense that it is the brass cased ammo that is causing the problem, seeing as he gets the same type of failures using the VZ mags I'm assuming it's not a mag release issue.

This does not bode well for folks who do not want to use corrosive ammo in their VZ carbines.

Using steel cased ammo in my VZ I do get failures exactly like Crazy_Merc posted if I ride the bolt when I'm manually cycling rounds through, when I'm actually firing however it works great.

I'm sure that Wolfgang will be able to sort out the issue for Merc, they're a great bunch of folks over at Wolverine, it's just the inconvenience of having a $1000 carbine that doesn't work properly out of the box that's a pain.

Then if I'm wrong I retract my previous statment and appolagize.

Best luck to you with your gun, I hope you don't loose faith in them as they are great gun.

steve, i like the way you analyze a problem bcos that would be my conclusion too. its probably not the mag but i would still lightly sand the lips if it has sharp edges.

merc, sorry to hear you are disppointed with your new VZ . i would too after spending a thousand $ and having problems . its best you send it to wolverine.

i had the same problem with my CZ years ago when i was using soft casing but for me i knew right away it was the commercial ammo cos i never had problem with surplus ammo.

upon close inspection of the casing it was obvious to me where the problem lies. the deep groves indicate the casing was getting hung up on the rear locking shoulder. after polishing the sharp edges and the ramp (as satain suggested) the problem was solved (im not recommending you do that cos i dont want you to screw up your warranty).

btw: do not ride the carrier forward when loading , just let it fly.

im glad you are man enuff to apologize when you are wrong and you are , and i do hope they dont lose faith cos they are great guns.

Yes. 100%.
Lap that baby out with a crate of steel cased and she'll eat anything from there on out.

My CZ was hard on brass cases until I had more than a thousand through it, but now she feeds brass like a dream.

Cool! I was wondering about that...so after a crate of surplus, brass usually works just fine? That's perfect for hunting: get familiar with the rifle using surplus, break it in, get used to the ballistics of it, and by the time the crate is done, it's ready for premium hunting ammo!

Think I'd like to get one of these rifles soon!:D

Update

Received my rifle back from Wolverine. They were nice enough to install extended mag release at no charge. Took it out today and same thing happened again: it would fail to feed, regardless brass or surplus. The only difference this time is I never know when its going to happen. It could be first or last round.
Does anybody have any idea what else I can do? I hate to have an unreliable rifle.

Can't use it for hunting, its a restricted firearm...

If they looked at it and returned it to you like that, I would basically return the rifle for exchange or refund.

What ammo were you using this time?

Please post pic's of the feed ramp's. As it may be a bur/bur's causing the cartaridge to jump up every so often or the angle of the feed ramp angle could be off slightly.
Also I don't believe that a retailer/importer would not go out and test a defective rifle before sending it back to the customer.
If you tried multiple different magazines & it didn't work and there is no broken parts then it must the feed ramp. This is why I mentioned it in the first post.
