Hi Guys,

Im new to the AR-15 world, and I just bought an MP 15. I went to the range today for the first time, inserted a mag into the gun and pulled the charging handle all the way and released it. When I went to fire I just heard a click, I removed the mag and checked the chamber. Only to realize the gun had not picked up the first round which was still in the mag. So in order to fire the gun I had to pull the charging handle back, depress the bolt lock open catch, insert a mag and release the bolt catch. Only then would the rifle chamber a round. Other than this the rifle ran flawlessly. As soon as I got back home I loaded a mag with a couple dummy rounds and was able to chamber the first round when pulling the charging handle back and releasing it. It seems the rifle will not chamber the first round when the mag is fully loaded with live ammo, is this normal or do I have a malfunctioning rifle?

Thanks for your help I would appreciate the opinions of more experienced people then myself.

If it's chambering the first round fine when the bolt is locked open and the bolt release depressed, my guess would be operator error by not pulling the bolt back far enough using the charging handle.

What mag are you using? Does problem presist if you don't load mag to capacity? (guess no with your snapcap test)

Last time I saw this was with my xcr-l and MFT 10 rd mag. The mag follower doesn't have enough room to go down when inserting a fully loaded mag into a closed bolt, thus the mag does not seat properly and prevented the next round to get picked up by the bolt.

I bet if you only load 4 (or 9) then the problem doesn't happen. Sometimes the mags are pinned exactly at 5, so ditch those mags and buy better stuff. Most ar pistol mags are not pinned, so you can disassemblr it and carefully file the follow to allow more give. I call it 10.5 rounds mags.

If you insert the mag when the bolt is locked back and you slap it closed, does it do the same thing? If not, then it's probably you just not pulling back far enough.

It work fine when the bolt is back and I release the bolt catch, its just when manually pull the charging handle. Thanks for the advice and comments will try it out next time I'm at the range!

Sounds like you're either walking the charging handle/bolt back after a charge, so it's not getting enough momentum to push the round, or you're not pulling back enough as someone said previously. Either way I think it's just part of being new to the platform. Work on it, I'm sure you'll get it quick. Snap caps can help when not at the range.

I use Magpul 5/30s and I've never had a feed issue.

It's a mag related issue... If the mag is pinned to 5 rounds, and not 5.5, when you try to seat it on a closed bolt, it's not quite in far enough and when you run the bolt it won't strip a round.... Try a magpul mag (which should be pinned to 5.5 rounds) and it will work fine. It's a common issue with pinned mags if they pin them too "tight"

if you want proof put 1 less round in your mag and test it out or insert the mag, pull the cocking handle back (and before releasing it) have a buddy tap the mag in.

I have the same issue with my colt. It strips the round fine if you load it on an open bolt and drop the bolt. If I load any mag I have on a closed bolt it will not chamber a round no matter how many times I rack it. Out of habit now I just never load a magazine on a closed bolt.

My suspicion is you’re too gentle in loading your full mag when the bolt is closed so the mag is not actually seated.

Try your mag again but this time insert firmly, make sure it clicks in place. Do a tug to be sure it’s seated, push again then rack the charging handle hard.

If this doesnt work then download your mag by one, as others have said. Military recommends downloading their 30 rounders to about 28 as they have similar issues.

Issue is you 5 rounds pinned mag. Basically it bounces back on closed bolt and is not secured with mag release.
Solution a) 5.5-5.9 re-pinning or b) insert and then slap the mag in (good habit anyway).

A reason I like ranger plates on my LAR mags, slap them in and a handle to tug on to make sure they are seated.

Be warned though, you'll have to sand down the follower legs as the ranger plate makes it very tight to get that last round in and nearly impossible to seat the mag on a closed bolt. After sanding, they work as designed. BTW, I never short count my mags.

I had some feed issues with my M&P when it was new. Now that I have 400 + rounds through it and a few really detailed cleanings it runs perfectly now.

Thanks all of you guys for the help. Will be going out shooting in the next two weeks and will give you guys an update with the advice I have received:)

What magazines are you using? I have this problem a lot with my LAR pistol mags. You sometimes just need to tap them so the cartridge sticks up more in the magazine so it can be picked up by the bolt.

Just gonna note that I've put some rounds through mine. No initial cleaning or lube, it's practically dry and runs great.
