pretty much been doing that for years too lol.

Numbers in the book are always a starting point and an end point... you need to find the place in the middle that works for what you are doing.
Min OAL is usually based on a comman FMJ of the projectile weight that is considered optimal (or original)... lots of HP and lighter projectiles are shorter and you can't seat them out far enough to meet MOAL and still be secure in the neck.


I like to replicate factory loads for mass production in calibers i shoot a lot.

So if i'm copying same say .30 carbine PPU ammo. I use the same case, same projectile, get the velocity matching... you can dump a box of factory ammo in the bin of reloads... no flyers.
 
I run my 9mm loads in my Ruger PC 9 and took OAL from factory ammo and have never looked back. I use CAMPRO 124GR RN and my own 124GR RN (LEE 6 cavity DIES)lead Cast powder coated bullets.

I tried 9 different powders in ladder tests and settled on Vihtavuori 3N37 as the best all around powder for 9mm. Currently running 3.5grs of 3N37 and pushing 1235 fps (avg), and 9mm pistol 1035 FPS (Avg), using cast or Campro 124gr bullet heads.
 
Since even plain 124 FMJ profiles can be very different if you are just taking your OAL from random factory ammo to use with random bullets you are much luckier than you are smart. Hornady FMJ can be run nearly right to 1.16" while others need 1.11" or less.
 
My Shadow 2 likes bullets seated to 1.092. I load 3.2 of titegroup for most jacketed and my own cast. My P10F wont chamber @1.092 but rather 1.080.

SAAMI writes the specs for chambers and ammo dimensions. Their dimensions guarantee that every make of ammo will fit in every chamber. It is ok for gun makers to use big chambers (Remington) and for ammo makers to make small bullets (IVI).


If SAAMI was designing footwear, every foot would be a size 9 or smaller and every boot would be a size 11 or bigger. You would be guaranteed that you could put on any boot or shoe. Whether or not the boot would be comfortable or even useful would a matter of luck.

You can make your ammo the same way. Or you can make the first round long and then seat it deeper until it fits the chamber and note that OAL for that particular bullet.
 
CZ Shadow's barrel is a bit tighter and finicky. And it is very sensitive about the bullet's ogive. I'd tried different bullets and found out CZ Shadow only like a certain bullet shape.
Some bullet may never fit the CZ Shadow due to its ogive shape. The best is to get a different brand of bullet and make a dummy round out of it before you buy a whole lot.
I'd learned the hard way nobody can give me different brand of bullet heads so I bought at least a bag each to test them out.
 
I have read that CZ's also don't like a brass length of more then .745

In my shadow 2 I'm very close to that... 147gr, 3.1gr titgroup, 1.10 OAL, runs the gun reliably with pretty light recoil...

Yes. If you needs a longer OAL for the Shadow, you need a gunsmith to ream the barrel for you so it can accept longer OAL. Many CZ shooters did that.
