It arrived today , new marstar m305 Cal 7.62mm

Got mine, gave it a quick wipe down and a once over. Everything is pretty straight and tight on this one, front sight was just a touch off center and staked (poorly staked I might add) but cast straight at least, gas cylinder will need a small shim, not tight until 8 o'clock, barrel is indexed pretty much 99% properly....maybe a hair over indexed going buy the feed cuts and the indexing line on top of the barrel. Finish is pretty decent with some black parts here and there like sight knobs (marked WCE...who they trying to fool?) and cylinder nut, rest is decent dark grey park. Still the same old dull tools running too fast on the barrel for that nice threaded/spiral look....idiots lol. Bolt, receiver, trigger group, piston, oprod are all serial numbered, barrel isn't but has a couple numbers....maybe date code, I dunno. Safety engages easily, trigger is decent. Only thing kinda crappy is the plastic stock....I dunno why I thought these were fiberglass, better then chu wood I guess....
One thing I haven't missed in a looong time is that greasy gross whale oil or WTF they coat everything in....can't be good for you. Even get a nice little bottle of it extra in the cleaning kit....yay...
One thing that won't move is the castle nut....like at all. Bent some good pliers, hammer and punch wouldn't budge it....going to try some solvent and see if it will free it up.
Spot welds are much more serious on this one then the one I had in 2005 and will take a little more then a good whack....some dremal grinding or some time in the drill press to remove that.
Happy enough with it so far...will see how it shoots soon.

You probably did, but just to be certain: did you remove the castle nut set screw first before trying to remove that castle nut?

Also, I found mine impossible to remove without the specialty castle nut pliers from brownells

I may be totally mistaken but my understanding is that years ago before the US banned imports.... It was a prerequisite to have the flash hiders welded. Some states did not permit a flash hider so some were made solid with no vane cuts.

Also it is my understanding that ALL these rifles were manufactured in the 90's or earlier and my guess is the flash hiders were welded on way back then.

Well I've been on the fence about ordering one of these but I think this thread has sealed my fate. Now, how to keep the wife from finding out?

Just quit smoking, quit drinking, and quit fornicati.... Okay, I'm drawing the line at that third strategy. Then with the first 2 changes in behaviour, you will save a poopload of money!

Cheers and keep helping the noobs around here!

I ordered my new M305B / SKS package today. Couldn't hold off any longer. Not sure why I picked up the SKS too, I already have all of those I need. I guess it never hurts to have another gun, for buddies that join you at the range from time to time! Now just looking forward to it arriving. Have to order and spring guide and spring, and A set of front and rear sights and a muzzle-break. Should be good for now :)

Cheers

Well I dunno if its been mentioned or its just this new batch, but the castle nut blind screw is a T7 torx head in mine. I have every allen key there is and none of them were fitting....took a closer look and sure enough.....torx T7.

Mine too but used my home made tool anyways hehe
Also... I've never met an m14 castlenut as tight as this one. I had to rig a cheater bar to my vice grip castlenut tool LOL. It's off now :D

I still haven't got mine to budge...tried some PB Blaster, hammer and punch, bent castle nut pliers....then gave up.
I'm warming up to the plastic stock....actually seems pretty solid at least, no real flex I can find. Will look much better after a coat of paint.....

My headspace is 1.637 which is decent overall. I have shot both 7.62x51 and MFS .308win without any trouble or indicators of trouble. So, I feel comfortable.
