Took grandpa's Winchester 1895 in 30 Gov't 06 (as the barrel stamp states) out to the range. On the advice of a good gunsmith, i shot it with my face turned away for the first round :D. Nothing came apart, so i put a few into the 25 yd butt with decent results, about 4" high.

I then tried another 3 at 100, still intact, and about 8" high. A quick adjustment to the rear buckhorn, and i brought it down to hit close to center at 100. Another 3 printed me a 2 1/2" group. Something i can live with for open sights and a scope target. Just for fun, i suprised the #### out of a buddy, and myself, when i smashed a standard clay pigeon at 100.

Looks to me like this gun still has the touch, i am very pleased with the way she prints on paper, kinda makes up for her looks, even though the scars all have stories.

I think a nostalgia hunt is in order for this fall, with nostalgia loads. Anybody have any suggestions for a classic bullet? I was thinking 180 gr winchester silvertips.

Congratulaions, it looks like a fine piece. I used to hunt with a fellow that had a 1895 in 30 US. (30-40 Crag). We climbed over some pretty good mountains while he had that rifle.
I think 220 grain bullets might be more nostalgic, if you can find them. Winchester Silver Tips would be ideal, but CIL Dominion would also be very appropriate.

The 1895 in .30-06 will develop some head space issues after ALOT of shooting. If I owned it I would handload some rounds that are about 15% under a factory load. Still lots of power but make the old girl last alot longer. I am not trying to scare you the gun will not blow up. You may notice some primers creeping out after ALOT of factory rounds. Some 220 round noses at 2300 fps would be perfect.

regards, Darryl

Good to hear 220. She shows the mileage but still wants to go make meat, look forward to the hunting story. I use 200 and 220gr KKSPs in my Krag. If I could find them in 303 cal I would do the same.

My grandfather is the man that got me involved in firearms and reloading he passed away 2 years ago now when he was 94.

I still have 3 rifles that he gave me I will never sell them.

One was the first rifle that I ever shot a deer with...

Enjoy that rifle and the memories I do everytime I shoot my Grandfathers guns...:)

How about some cast bullets? Going to get some for my 38-55-apparently they like them more than the jacketed bullets. Doesnt get much more nostalgic than that unless you load up some black powder. Gramps would be pleased. By the way, cast are cheap to buy. Check out the OMA prices. Whoa! $28 for 200 even for the 38-55. May have to get some for the 30-30.
