I was out tonight with the .308 looking for rabbits when I spotted one about a hundred yards away.I extended the bi-pod and laid on the ground ,take careful aim and 'boom'.
I hit the little clump of gravel the bunny was sitting behind and he jumped about 3 feet straight in the air and made for the woods at warp speed.:D
Funny but embarrassing at the same time.......no excuses....I missed the little bugger.

The 275 Rigby would have nailed him. :p

It's funny but when you shoot one rifle alot, you get to where you know the instant your brain tells your finger to squeeze whether or not the shot is a good one.
You'll get "Bugs" the next time he shows John, don't worry too much!;)

bunny

I have my 7x57 sighted in at about 2 inches high at 100 yards and the .308 is shooting right on, so I instinctively hold low resulting in "bugsy" makin' for the woods, my fault 100 %. My "275 Rigby" (7x57) Mountain rifle is in the process of getting a nice laminate thumbhole stock added in the next few days.Coat number 2 of tru-oil goes on the stock tomorrow. Pics soon.........:D

bunny gun

Yup, I think your right about being undergunned, the .338 mag comes out of the locker today. :p 225 grain Hornady's launched at about 2700 fps oughta solve the bunny getaway problem. Thanks for the advice, :D John

What is the season on Bunnys on the island... all year round I take it.
So is that the first time you ever missed anything Carbine?
There is this neat invention coming to a gunstore near you real soon... it's called a shotgun.:p

Bunnies here on the island are open year round and folks are encouraged to knock down the population. :D As for missing I don't do that very often and thats about it for that topic.:) As for a shotgun its tough hitting a rabbit at 100 yards with one and up close it's no challenge at all. I would rather miss a rabbit once in awhile with a rifle than hit them every time with a scattergun. :p I do have a nice Synthetic Winchester 12 gauge pump with screw in chokes but I find it more challenging to shoot a small target with a rifle. The rabbits here have some kind of gross parasite under the skin that resembles a lumpy worm......yuck. Bang ...poof..........leave'em for the sh!thawks.

Better yet, zing some of them sh!thawks when they drop in for a free meal - those buggers are nothing but pests, too.

I had the same sort of experience with my 25-06 on a muskrat first shot wizzed over his head, forgot I was set 3" high at 100. I got a second shot :) muskrat lost his head :D

just keep whacking them :)

That's called 'calling your shots.' Tis a good thing...

And speaking of misses - why are they called a near-miss? Wouldn't a near miss mean 'I nearly missed him?'

Not that I'd know, I never miss unless I mean to, hehehe

bunnies

After missing that flea bitten varmint like that I had to try again.:D Same stretch of road and about the same distance as last time, one shot from the newly stocked .308 and bugsy went to that big carrot patch in the sky......at least that's where he was flying when I saw him last.

I reckon I have missed more rabbits than I have hit over a lifetime of hunting. Same goes for deer, for that matter.........but "most" of the misses were on running game, which is not my strong suit.

Too bad the rabbits have the parasite and are not good for the pot - I love to eat them! I think the only other place I ever heard where rabbits were considered just varmints was Australia.........

wabbits

Hi Doug, I used to shoot them with the 22 LR and bring them home for a buddy of mine who eats rabbit. But after skinning one and seeing the skin crawl around and the STINK just grossed me out, so now they are target practice. I see why the regulations allow the rabbits to be shot where ever they are seen, legally of course.

A friend of mine missed once; to this day I can't look him in the eye.

I too hit a small game animal with a 308 and wished I had missed.
I'd rather take a crack at him with the 22lr than do that thing again....
