It was the BEST of my hunting gear last year

I got a new piece of gear called a sling hook made by Tarlick. It velcros tight to your pack strap just by your shoulder and nestles the rifle sling in place so it never slips off your shoulder while hiking. It seems to work really well especially on side hills and navigating over deadfall.

You have to order it as seems to be unavailable in Canadian stores. Makes carrying a rifle a lot more secure. I'm thinking of getting a second one for the left shoulder. One of those little things that just make life a lot easier.

I'd agree with that sure, but if some new gear helps me stay warmer while doing it or extends the time I can stay outdoors I'm going to put that gear in the success column haha.

good point Jon
some wanna make us think that new and improved gear is not for them ...Haha

This is success. Companionship between father and son x 4 decades. Our 2023 whitetail bucks. I'll remember the hunt, but not the gear!

I never said it's all about being successful . you did
have u upgraded your rifles , ammo , trail cams , scopes, clothing over the last few years .. that's what I was asking if and how it helped in being successful or "not"
you got defensive

My $100 2nd-hand Camp Chef Barrel stove (Regularly priced at $329.99) paired with my $200 vintage 9x12 wall tent I finally sewed a stove jack into. Warm as toast during a surprise hard cold snap in BC.'s central interior in October.

Thank you. I was also tickled that I was able to get the whole thing set up, stove assembled, wood cut and fire going in 3 1/2 hours.

Fortunately there were plenty of dead trees just the right dimensions right at the site for my poles.

Your opening statement mentioned "successful". Success does not arrive from material items, that's if you discribe success as: killing a big game animal, because of a new item. Some people have lost their way to find the fundamental skills and traditions of hunting.

You are the one, not the OP, who has interpreted "successful" as having anything to do with killing a big game animal in this thread. Why don't you set down that rather large chip and just contribute (or not) to a thread that the majority of us have correctly interpreted as a what-gear-worked-for-you-this-year discussion?

I'll delete previous comments, must of misinterpreted.

Mr. Buddy heater in my pop-up deer blind. Last year shot a nice doe in Michigan at ~ 30 yards with my Mr. Buddy on. This year, shot two does in one morning, both around 55 yards. Mr Buddy kept me warm and combined with the pop-up blind I can hunt pretty much all day any day no matter what the weather (wind storms, tornadoes, etc not included!).

No real new gear this year, but over the years good binoculars have contributed more to success than any other piece of gear. I'd rather hunt with a $100 shotgun with slugs and good binoculars than any rifle and $100 binoculars.

I've been humming and hawing over big bill wool pants for years and I think I have to get a pair.

I used to work outdoors in -25 to -35 weather all winter long in the bush in Northern BC for around a decade. For years I was on the "just as good" tip for cheap gear. Switching to merino base layers, primaloft and 100% wool midlayers and goretex pro outers was like night and day. Not to mention not having to buy new gear every couple of years

New gear this year? A quality semi auto for waterfowling. Major game changer
