This giant of a shotgun came to me through an old family friend and mentor.
Sadly, in his last couple of years he dealt with a lot of pain (failed knee surgery, infection, stroke, heart attack...yikes!) but still managed to get out shooting/hunting sometimes.
I'm not sure what happened to this shotgun...as a kid I remember it being in great shape. On one of it's last outings it must have been "ridden hard and put away wet", because when it came to me 2 years ago it was a rusty mess!
Today, I decided to give the old girl some love...This shotgun was rusted together! Where the metal went through the forearm, the wood and metal had literally become one...no amount of soaking in oil or banging on it would get them apart.
Seeing as the forearm was also rotted out where it met the receiver, I decided to get out the chisel and knock it apart...luckily I have already found another one online
.
The rest of the gun came apart fairly easily, so that was good.
I'll do my best to clean it up, and get her running in time for goose season...maybe post pics of my progress and finished results?
Here she is in pieces:
This is where the metal and wood rusted together...you can see where the metal went through the wood in the 2 split pieces.
Lots of rust to deal with, but I think I can get most of it off and back in serviceable condition.
