Ithica XL 900

Is it gas operated (SKB) or the old Ithaca recoil operated one? I would remove the barrel and the stock and the fore end (part of the sequence to remove the barrel) I would then prop the receiver up and the rest down and spray a whole can of degreaser into it. Remove the mag spring and plug and hose that out too. Once dry a little lube can be put where needed with a q tip and some break free. Any google check should reveal the disassembly. Shotgun World is a good ref site also.

cheers Darryl

I have had 3 XL 900's and never seen a recoil operated one before.
Does it still have the silver sides?

Min were as simple to clean as could be.

But, I seldom ever cleaned it. It stayed pretty damn clean on it's own.

Putting it back together was tricky, everything had to be in perfect alignment and then all moved back together.

Good Luck !!!

open the action. push down on the barrel from the muzzle with the palm of your hand.with your other hand, unscrew the magazine cap and let up on the barrel slowly.Cleanliness isn't as critical to the cycling of a recol operated semi as it is to a gas operated gun. This will allow the forend and barrel to be removed, cleaned and degreased and oiled. the trigger group can be removed and cleaned and oiled as well by removing the trigger plate pin.

It has to be a 900 if it's recoil operated -- If I recall, the XL series was gas operated.

The XL900 is a gas operated shotgun! There is a lot of confusion on this because Ithaca/SKB made a recoil operated shotgun in previous years and it was just called the Ithaca 900.
It's fairly straightforward to take apart, the trigger asembly removes just like the remington. There is a part in the top of the reciever that must be engaged properly with the spring in the stock when the bolt assembly is re-installed.
I recommend you replace the spring in the buttstock if it's never been replaced. The action will close much crisper and the gun cycles better. Parts available through Sharp's guns in Dunnville, Ontario.

The XL900 looks like this:

My cousin has one of those (whith a cracked bolt, for which I've been looking for a replacement for awhile), first do like your 870 ... uncrew the cap, take out the cap, slide the handguard off then wiggle the barrel around and it (should) come out ....
Then comes the tricky part .... First find the trigger assembly pins then knock them out, and pull out the trigger mechanism like any 870 .... Then look underneath it and you'll see a hole at the bottom of the bolt .... Find something to fit in said hole ans shove it in, hold it back, and you should be able to pull the operating handle right out. Pull out tool and the bolt should come out .... That's the way I figured it out after well after 2 hours of fiddling around.

The Ithaca's that have an XL as part of the model number are gas operated, the others are a recoil operated.

The only differences between the 300/900 versions is the engraving.

Very True.
I have the 900XL and it is Gas operated. Great to clean just like the 870.
Both Great guns I have never had a problem with either.
And yes they do stay fairly clean as well...:shotgun:
I believe the XL stands for extra light?? becuse it is not very heavy for a semi IMO..:shotgun:
I was think of selling mine anyone have an Idea of its value??

These guns sell for anywhere between $300-$500. They are very underated in my opinion, light weight and nice to shoot.
Sharp's Gun's Ltd. in Dunnville, Ont. specializes in Ithaca and SKB parts and service. I live in B.C. and have ordered parts from him with no problems (sent him cash, he sent the change). He should have the bolt.

I have a 3inch barrel if anyone is looking.

My appologies folks, it IS gas operated. I figured it wasn't because of the lack of "SKB" on it. But, when I took of the forarm, there were the gas rings etc.

It looks just like the one in the picture that Canso posted.

I'll see if I can't get that barrell loose today.

Thanks guys.
