It's baaaack!

well I agree that it's not a great looker but it will probably be a nice camp/survival gun and go to gun for small game.Once cabelas get's it in stock I might just get a 410/22mag version,wonder if the rifle barrel will have the same amazing accuracy that my other savage rifles have,hope so.
 
I've tried real hard to like the original model 24's but couldn't do it after owning and getting rid of three of them. Now they cheapened the construction and made the new version even more ugly! Not going in the right direction IMHO.

I quite like my 24F, for nothing to do with its looks. If I didn't have it, I'd think about trying this new 42, despite its looks.

Well I agree its not pretty...it is a lighter and more durable solution. Now if the barrels are regulated properly...I WILL be getting one.

exactly my point,with a quick camo rattlcan paint job it'd look pretty good methinks.small game around canada will come to fear the dreaded *pop! click bang! of a savage o/u once again :D :D
 
I'd prefer 20 guage over .410, and 12 guage would even be better.

I don't know about down south, but up here, 12 guage is by far the cheapest shotgun to shoot and 410 is quite expensive. And I'm not a huge fan of the killing power of the .410 on hares and grouse, to be honest.
 
They said they stopped making the 24 because it cost too much to produce, couldn't make a profit at the price point where people bought them. They say this new 42 costs less to build, and the retail price is less than I had to give for my 24 used.
 
The Model 24 is a far better looking gun. I have used one for years and it has been very reliable. That gun may be functional but not so much in the looks department.
 
I love my old 24 in 30-30/20guage!
Using cast bullets for the .30 and various shot sizes for the 20guage its the ultimate farm yard gun to keep in the shop or behind the door and can handle everything from starkings to wolves!

Only issue I've ever had with it was the cheap plastic trigger guard broke a few years back and I replaced it with a hammered copper job.

Still have the original purchase recipt from when my grandfather bought it in the 80's for $240
