Should have gotten round to this much sooner - but better late than never. Picked up my first ever SKS. It's a Chinese with Norinco markings, and as far as I can tell, is from sometime in the 70's or 80's. Tomorrow is it's first trip to the range and I am really looking forward to it.

Very nice! Looks a lot like my Norinco. Does yours have a factory triangle stamp?
Don't bother trying to date yours by the serial #, since only factory /26\ rifles had an accurate production date system.
Mine is a 1 million serial # that I bought last month. Except it's clearly not from 1957. Likely a seventies production based on it's other characteristics. I think your guess about it being from the 70's or 80's is accurate.

Yours looks like the commercial Norinco I bought about 30 years ago (for $99). Allowing for inflation, they are cheaper today.

I made two simple mods to mine. used a lee Enfield rear sight, brazed into a slot in the cover, to convert it to a peep sight, and tapped the rear cover to take a 1/4 x 20 bolt to keep the cover solid.

With these sights I would not hesitate to use this rifle for hunting.

This rifle works well. I used it recently to shoot a CQB match. I found I could load it with stripper clips fast enough to be competitive. Video shot from a camera stuck on the brim of my hat:

just dont go reading into optics, Im about ready to slam my head against the wall, so much back and forth and cant seem to find any decent reviews or options for sights!

I've found they tend to have their good and bad points, fairly mitigated if you don't shoot corrosive ammunition and keep the round count low, like I do for my hunting SKS. The thing I'd like to find is a reliable aftermarket magazine that loads, feeds, ejects, and removes as well as the original.

Ganderite, thanks for posting the video. Are you a fan of ghost ring sights for most applications?
