Well, folks, I finally got the ammo that came as part of the purchase.
Here's a round with the box:
Looks kinda so-so, right?
Here it is with some rounds with which you may or may not be familiar.
Left to right - 450/400 NE 3", 9.3x62, 8x57JS, 303 British, 22 Hornet and 22lr:
For those unfamiliar with 9.3x62 it's about the same length as an '06 and the dimensions are very similar to 35 Whelen, although it fires a .366" cal bullet and has greater case capacity due to a shorter neck.
But I feel the true representation of its size is this pic along side a 22lr.
And these are the actual size......I resized the pic until it was the same:
I'd have to say that my biggest impression was the weight of the thing.
It is REALLY heavy.
When you hold it between your thumb and forefinger, with your thumb near the rim and your finger wrapped around the case just up from the case head the mass of the bullet is palpable.
I well understand why there is a hollow "thnkk!!" as people drop these into a double rifle.
Turns out it was $129 a box of 20 but that still rates $6.50 a round.
So now I have some live rounds to play with - 14 all up - and another 6 once fired cases to play with.
A mate who lives in the US is kindly ordering the dies and shell holder for me as the combination would have me paying close to AUD$200 here but will see me pay just over half, especially since the Aussie and US dollars are close at present.
Then it's just a case of picking up some Hawkesbury River Bullet Co. 41 cal bullets and going at it.
I promise my range test will include a video......
