Ok gents. Taking advantage of a few short days and weekend to give my stock an OD krylon paint job.

I've searched these forums and think I have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

I'm going to degrease it once more, give it a light sand and then get down to painting. I'm thinking it shouldn't be that bad, as it's just one colour, but I was also hoping to stencil our great nation's flag on the stock too.

For those of you who have done this already, any last minute tips? Anything you would have done differently?

Did you hang it and spray? Lay it down? How much should I care about getting the paint inside the stock?

As always, your collective wisdom is always appreciated!

My personal tip is BE PATIENT.

Do a very light spray, wait 30 seconds, repeat several times. Don't try to finish in a single pass. You'll get amazing results. If you do a spill, don't wipe it off wet. Wait for it to dry, scrub/sand it off then do another spray.

You can make mistakes and repair them easily, this stuff forgives a lot. Be sure to post pictures!

After you do your prep work dont touch it with bare hands the oils on your skin will f up your paintjob. Also make sure you figure out a way to hang your peice before you start then less you touch and move it the better also find some matte clear or it wont last too long.
Oh and dont get to excited let it dry for as long as you possibly can even longer then they recommend when your finished.
Ppp = ppp
Piss poor prep = piss poor paint.

Ok. I've rigged up a giant, unused cardboard box for a mini paint centre. Should I paint it while hanging or on its side, flipping after dry? If painting while hanging, will it run?

I have about 0% experience with spray paint.

Captain lots of good advice in the previous posts. You have chosen a color that best describes the M-14 in my opinion. You will be very pleased with the business like look of your rifle, and I've got alot of positive comments on the military look OD green adds to the already greening(lots of oil) parkerizing on mine. I did mine 3 years ago and it's still 99% there. Very tough stuff if done in light layers allowing to dry and then a long dry at the end as described.

Thanks for the response.

Should hopefully match my OD green SHG too!

Just one last question! Paint on its side or hanging??

I'd hang it. From my painting experience it will even out the color. You won't forget how many coats are on one side vs. the other. Speaking of coats, follow the directions on the can. Either wait 15min and reapply (light coats!) or wait a week, lightly sand and re-coat.

Round 1 is complete! Opted to hang within the big box. Worked shockingly well. Letting it set until I can find some matte clear coat.

Pictures upon completion. I'm quite excited to pull off the bit of stencilling too!

This is the most fun I've had with arts and crafts in recent memory..!

I'd let her hang to get uniform coverage. The light coats moving quickly I'm guessing first lets the Krylon anchor/embed itself to the plastic, almost becoming one, and them each successive thin layer adheres well to itself, kind of like a multi- layered weld build up, and not a given micron thickness just laying there barely stuck.

Despite having never welded, I'd agree. I could literally see each successive layer absorb and adhere right before my eyes as I went along. Impressive stuff for $6.67!

I just did my USGI stock with krylon. I did 2 coats of paint followed my 2 coats of matte clear. Krylon makes a nice clear coat. I found it a a craft store.

Both the paint and clear went on well. Take your time though and allow to dry.

Have a look.

Found the matte in the craft section at Walmart. I basically did three coats of the OD and I'll put the matte on tomorrow or Saturday.

The stenciling worked like a charm too. I'm quite pleased overall.

How long do you recommend waiting before I put it all back together?

It says on the can it will cure in 7 days. That will prevent chipping of the paint. Great stuff. I did an old Honda Goldwing in desert tan with a Japanese flag on the tank a couple of years ago after taking off all the useless stuff on it like bags and anything chrome.

Ok. So three coats of clear matte later, I'd say it's looking good.

Unfortunately, when I went to apply the matte today, I noticed that there were a few uneven spots on the bottom of the stock. Sadly, I'd already taken the stenciling off, so I had to just do a rectangle, which left some subtle lines. This is surely a result of less than ideal lighting.

All in all, the finish is impressive and I learned a lot.

I'll post pictures once I have it all built up, including the OD SHG after the Trenton M14 clinic in a few weeks.

Thanks, sincerely, for your input and swift responses. It was the virtual pat on the bum I needed to dive in just do it.

Screw it. Patience is not typically one of my virtues. Accordingly, I put it all back together, just to behold its newfound beauty. Also, this is my first ever photo uploading! Enjoy.

You can see where I had to recover the stencil after round 1 when I noticed the paint on the stock wasn't as consistent as it should have been. Not the end of the world.

There it is! I'm quite pleased. The SHG and Aimpoint PRO will be the final touches . . . until perhaps a blackfeather happens down the road.

Great job, has anyone ever used krylon on rubber?,,I have a remmy 700 with the hogue rubber insert stock...black and grey one,,anyways,,this will be my first firearms paint project ,in OD green,,but I'm not sure if I can paint rubber or just keep it and tape it off.then on to the t97',which I kinda wanna do in multi cam,but that might be too busy.
