I've already blown the annual gun budget, so why not add a 7.62x39 bolt. Which one?

Why slow down when you're on a budget shredder - politics has taught me so much. Being a new owner of a CZ 452 Ultralux, I am very impressed with the quality and accuracy of that little rimfire rifle. So, I made the silly mistake of reading up on other CZ rifles and now I have the notion that I somehow need (really just want) a 7.62x39 bolt action, with the CZ 527 being the stretch of my reading thus far; the bulk of feedback suggesting the 527 is a great rifle.

Am I just being a newly enamoured CZ fanboy, or should I be looking at another brand for my 7.62x39 bolt rifle? I saw they make a FS 527 in .223 - do they offer that for 7.62x39?

I have owned the cz 527 and currently own the zastava m85. Definitely the cz is a much higher quality rifle. That being said it is almost double the price of a zastava. If you like tinkering the zastava is not a bad gun. If you want a really good rifle straight out of the box the cz is a great way to go. The only negative is that milsurp ammo is still pretty bad stuff so you do need to accept that you will get a rifle that will be shooting somewhere in the 1.5-2.5" range depending on the ammo. If you are willing to buy better quality ammo or reload, I think you will find that the caliber is actually pretty decent.

I'd wait for the new Howa. There stuff shoots well and suspect it will be the best deal of the bunch.

Wait for the Howas.

With the dollar the way it is, the Howas will probably be close to the same price as a used 527 - and then I'd have to throw out the Nikko scope and live with a synthetic stock and magazine of the Howa. We'll see, but I don't know if this 'need' will last until late 2016. ;)

I have both a CZ 527, and a Zastava M85. Love em both. The 527 is a luxury machine. Smooth as silk and a treat to shoot. The M85 is utilitarian that get's the job done. Both have their places and both are worth their respective dollars.

Thanks,
Cal.

I have the CZ in the 452 17HMR and the 527 in 17 Hornet. Both are great rifles. In fact the 452 rimfire is the same size as the 527 centerfire.
I would for sure buy another CZ.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. Thanks.

As for the Savage - it's almost the same price as a CZ but I just don't like synthetic stocks.

I kick myself in the hiney for not buying the good used CZ that I saw at a gun show! Someday I will get one, the next one I won't let slip by! I love my CZ .22, a great rifle!

Yeah, but that price problem relating to the dollar is going to affect all 3 a little down the line. I'd still wait for the Howa given that.

Really love my 527 Carbine. Very accurate with bulk non corrosive. Set trigger is VERY good, regular (not using set) is really good, too. Handy, lightweight, good for plinking or deer. Would make a good camp or truck gun with the irons or a low powered scope.

I too have (and love) the CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39. Check out my other post in the 7.62x39 thread for a more detailed review. Only drawback is the metal mags can be finnicky with feeding the mini-masuer but other than that.... AMAZING. If you reload this gun is unreal... If you don't, the Barnual shoots OK out of mine but the Federal AE 123gr FMJ shoots right at about 1inch.
