I've been meaning to ask...

Ok, so only M14-ish rifle you can legally carry in the bush is either Standard length M1A or M305. Anything shorter than that, no good.
Thanks for all the great input. It's been helpful.

You can have a standard length M1A or M-305 barrel shortened not less than 18.5 inches. That would still leave you with a non restricted firearm. Keep in mind that the barrel length issue only applies to semi-autos. If you start talking manual repeaters, like lever guns or pump actions, the barrel length can be as short as you want, provided the overall minimum length is no less than 26 inches(660mm). Clear as mud? Don't get me going on rimfires.

It keeps on getting sillier. You can cut a barrel down yourself on anything other than a semi-auto down to 457mm as long as the overall length is still 660mm. Shorter barrels are allowed if they came manufactured that way.

Uh... what....?

So, say I go and get my hands on 18.5 inch barrel from say, Fulton Armory, then I can have shorter than standard length semi-suto M1A/M305 that I can now LEGALLY carry in the bush, right? As long as the barrel is 18.5" or less, right?

Why is it so hard for me to understand this? Am I actually getting dumber as I'm getting older? How is that possible...

Kafka...

You can cut a barrel down yourself on anything "other than" a semi-auto down to 457mm as long as the overall length is still 660mm. Shorter barrels are allowed if they came manufactured that way (We are still talking about NON-SEMI-AUTO firearms.)

For your SEMI-AUTO M1A you must have 18.5" or greater to be Non-Restricted - No Exceptions.

I can see I'll be keeping these posts. This one is gonna take a few reads. And yes said the blind man as he picked up his hammer and saw, we are getting dumber, but so are the rules. Clear as mud. Why would length stop at 18.5" and the other start at 18"? Goofy ####!
