I've got a full stock for a Gew 98 (turns out it's a Brazilian 1908)

What are the chances I may find a sportered Gew 98 in restorable shape?

I've never seen a sportered one and I wonder if anyone else had.

Oddly enough it has what I think are Israeli markings - but since most of their materiel was from Europe it was likely German originally. I can't see any other markings. It has no finger grooves - post 1915 manufacture.

There is a star of david with a B inside it.

I can't identify it as anything other than a Gew 98. It's not any other model of Mauser stock.

Star with B inside is Brazilian so it is for the Brazilian M1908. IIRC some inletting is needed to fit a Gew98.

Aha!

The give-away was the inletting for the handguard clip forward of the receiver.

Now to find a sportered 1908.

You know - the stock is so close to a Gew 98 I bet there's a number of things you could do with it. I've offered to restore someone's Gew 98 for them (my shop can either fabricate or find most of the metal bits for it) and I would be open to anyone else piping in with an idea. I would, however, like to do the work to restore it myself since I have experience and an interest in this art ;)

The only external visual difference between this stock and the Gew 98 is the extra inletting for the handguard clip. I can easily make that invisible. It even has the stock disk that the Germans used on their Gew98s.

I would not like to see this stock sanded, but inletting and whatnot is fine.

I found the original handguard too. I could make it into a Gew98 handguard quite easily.

Why?

The Brazilian 1908's and Argentine 1909's made by DWM Berlin are some of the finest examples of German firearms out there. Why butcher it to make it into something it isn't?

Did Brazil make em cause I have a sportered one.

They were made in Germany for Brazil. I imagine on most sportered ones that the barrel has been cut :(

They were quite long rifles.

If the barrel on yours is full length I'd love to buy it (or restore it for you!).

Gew 98

I have three of the Gew 98's but wouldn't use a Brazilian 1908 stock to restore one. I would use a Peruvian 1909 because it has the same type of rear sight.
The 1908 has the wrong bayonet lug but any K98 lug will work if you aren't fussy.

I'm not sure how the type of rear sight or bayonet lug would affect your stock choice. Neither of those parts need affect the stock.
