My SVT-40 arrived. Like my recent SKS purchases I really had no idea what I was getting until it arrived. I bought it from SFRC and only asked that it have a decent bore, stock and a 12 port muzzle break if possible. They came through in spades, props to SFRC

She's a 1941 Tula refurb. I'm pretty sure there's a square stamped above the Tula star on the receiver bridge, indicating a SVT-38 conversion, except the bridge looks more square than rectangular. Over at mosinnagant.net it says the SVT-38 has a longer, rectangular receiver bridge, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

The other thing I'm wondering about is the stock. Do I have an AVT stock ? If it is, should I be pleased ? At first glance I was happy to see a naval stock, but then I saw the notch on the right side. What does the A on the right butt stock mean ? The stock matches the receiver serials. It doesn't look to be stamped over anywhere. Is it possible this stock actually matches ?

Anyway, really pleased. I haven't cleaned it yet. The bore looks dark, but can see strong rifling so hopefully she cleans up nice.

here's some pics

Nice Tokarev you have. Its a SVT 40,not a SVT 38 converted. The stock is an AVT one. During refurb, taking AVT stock was common to replace a cracked or broken stock. The stock used for refurb was very likely a left over AVT stock so number have been stamped on it to match the rifle. Your rifle wasnt born with that stock at first. I like AVT stock, they are made heavier. tell us when you shot her:)

Sweet..got a Joce first reply !

Yeah the stock is noticeably thicker at the pistol grip than a couple other SVT's I've handled, and heavier. Cool info about the stock. So the rifle isn't original to the stock...but the stock is original to the rifle, even though it was milled for the AVT ? Love the personality these old rifles have :D

Real happy with the condition, the LOP is perfect for me, so much better feeling than the SKS..even better feeling than my M1. Can't wait to shoot her, although I doubt it's gonna be anytime soon with work overtime in the way.

What's the A on the butt stock mean ?

thanks for the info Joce !

The A stand for avtomat(automatic), was stamped on AVT stock. The AVT production was very very short but the unnused stock were put on late production SVT or used during refurb. I have a SVT 40 1944 with an AVT stock stamped 1943.

The square stamp is likely just a refurb mark, sometimes they have a diagonal line through it but some don't.

I to really like how the avt stock on mine feels, good LOP and my big hands fit nicely, no awkward position to get a good trigger pull.

Double checked the right side butt stock. Looks like a light strike on one side of the date stamp (the tula star is light on the same side) but pretty sure it's stamped 1944...but it's possible it's 1943

ok, good to know. It's definitely not struck as deep as the original star and date. hard to tell sometimes on these old rifles...sometimes scratches can look like a stamp of some kind, lol

thanks !

Flick the safety behind the trigger to the right it is full auto unless they changed it to semi auto. Stupid gun laws.
The safety is unlikely able to be put on the right, unless the safety lever was replaced during refurb with an AVT safety, even then, the rifle would not fire automatic.... Why peoples get so upset thinking that a SVT with the AVT stock could be really an AVT?? Just saying.

Out of all my milsurps, the SVT40 is my favorite to shoot ! Wait till you get out and play with it, your grin will get much bigger. Welcome to the SVT family !

thanks ! She's a beauty...can't get over how well this rifle fits me..and I'm not a huge dude. Will be cleaning her up this weekend, can't wait to take her to the range.

Now, of course, I have to get a hex receiver 1891/30 to keep her company..I think it's in the rules or something. At least that's what I'll be telling my wife ;)
