hi,
I have touched up some spots here and there on my shotguns etc when the parts start to wear... but here is my problem:

I dont really know much of anything when it comes to refnishing the metal of a gun. I just got a really nice .40 cal Beretta, and it has some minor spots on it that are in need of a touch up. I did the prep like the instructions on the bottle say.. but in some spots the gun looks like it has a thick bluing on it.. kind of like paint chips. It takes the dark color no problem, but if you look at it, you can still see where the "blemish" was. Also, there are a few scratches on the slide ( very shallow scratches) the scratches are not to the metal, and I am affraid if I rub it with the steel wool ( #0000) it may make the scratches worse.

Is it because I am afraid to rub it with the steel wool? will rubbing it with steel wool even things out?
The gun is a "shiney blue" and were I touched it up.. its a dull blue.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of Beretta? Is it Al or Steel? If it's Al it could be anodized etc and then parkerized...

some parts of my old 92 were hot blued( the slide, barrel, and a few others) while others were simply aluminum PAINTED black- the frame esp- you might have better luck with BLACK PAINT FOR ALUMINUM- possibly baked on, but i'm not sure- this was on BOTH my 92sb and my 948 -

Its a 96.
not sure if you can see it in this picture very well, but this is my problem:

I hope you can see it in the second picture....look just below the muzzle... its a blotch
Is it painted? like a powder coat paint job? because what it looks like to me is that the clear coat has worn.. there is a definate thickness to the factory finish. My attempt at bluing only darkens the metal.. it doesnt fill the microscopicly thin void.
If it were a car I would put some Bondo in there, sand it then paint it...

that's a wear spot on the beretta and you're NOT going to be able to fix it with anything but beretta's COLOR version of a hot blue- and it's going to happen each time you work the slide to some degree- in other words, short of going to a new barrel, you're stuck with it- each of my betettas has this and you can bet they didn't have powder paint back in 51( that's when my 948 was made) - it's just a straight hot blue-
