I've got WOOD!

5 1/2 months, and its finally here. My Richard's Microfit Dual grip Thumbhole stock for my Savage .338WM.
I am happy with the inletting, just have to mill out mag well.
But it fits nice, I can finally reach the bottom of the trigger while still holding on to the stock.
The weight diff. is 3lb 5oz for the laminate and 1lb 12oz for the old synthetic.
Packaging kind of sucked, all was well though (what you see is how I got).
Rough stock compared to my finished Marlin.

I did order there finishing kit from them but was told that they could not ship into Canada. So, does anybody have any suggestions to which finish I should use? And where to get in the Edmonton area?

go to the hardware store get a few sheet of sand paper(100,220,320,)and a package of 000 or 0000 steel wool.you might have to try WSS for some birchwood casey stockfilll and stain (if you want).then some birchwood casey stock true oil.that is all you would really get in the kit from them.

Beautiful gun. I have used Minwax Polyurethane on some stocks with very good results. My next one will probably be with tung oil though. I have heard/seen good things.

I would bed the rifle right away to prevent the mag assembly from slamming into the little bit of wood that seperates the well from the trigger group. I have seen a number of laminate rifles crack there from recoil. One of them was my Savage 12BVSS in .223.

Thanks for the heads up on the bedding. I was going to make pillars at work today, but thought to research the O.D. of them first.

Take the time and use 0000 steel wool, go with the grain until the stock is smooth. Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil dabbed on by hand works best, again go with the grain. After the first coat is dry use steel wool again to work out any runs or imperfections. Apply second coat and allow 24 hrs between coats. This process can be repeated till the desired finish.

Get a sealer, then use tru oil, 220 grit is a fine as you need to go, for the first 10 light rub in's. then 320 to finish.
A tip, Peanut butter, rub some in after each time you apply the finish.
This is for your hands, NOT The stock its awesome !

In addition, temps must be up, the finish , shake well, and a warm stock. 25 deg . is fine. I would also stipple the stock with a dremel, and use pics off the net for pattern ideas

Tape that lovely pad , to keep finish off it.
