So I've been bitten by the pistol bug and I will be looking to get a full size 1911 in .45acp when I get back to Canada (currently in the land down under where guns are scary bad things!) early next year.

I've been looking at the Iver Jonson Eagle quite a bit but the Para Ordnance line of 1911s has come to my attention. Buying a canadian made gun would be great but I'm wondering what people's experiences have been. Which do you prefer out of the 2 and why?

Never owned an Iver Johnson. Para has had a bad reputation in the past with sketchy quality, however for the last 2 years, since Para was bought by Remington, they have greatly improved. I own 2 new models that Para offers and they are just as nice as my Kimbers. Unfortunately they improved their quality just in time to stop making 1911's under the Para name, as they are going to be making 1911's under the Remington brand now.

Iver Johnson's are rebranded SAM's. They're of a higher spec than compared to the entry level SAM 1911's that you can find, up near the Thunderbolt model in terms of quality.

Never owned a Para but own a couple of SAM's, so I can vouch for their quality. They're probably the best crafted 1911's that you can find for the price.
