Hi

I just curious if anyone knows more about the "Iver Johnson 1911" brand of pistols.
The name sounds to me like a designer brand for men socks. cou:

The only thing I could find about them is that they are made in Philippines,
and they supposed to be better than Norincos.

Considering they are around 500-625, that puts them well above the Norcincos.
Are thy really that much better than the Norincos?
Is it worth the extra?
On the other hand, for a bit more there is the Ruger SR1911 to be had. (695 @ Lever)

What are your thoughts?
How would you decide?

Thanks

The new Iver Johson 1911's are a budget model. The three examples I've seen of them all had the same problem of being stuffed into a buffing wheel for too long. This mis-treatment smeared the surfaces badly. The two I've gotten to handle and shoot did OK but were not exceptional by any means as to accuracy. And I'm used to 1911's making me look good rather than just OK.... :D

So all in all for the cost of them you're getting what you're paying for. No more and no less.

Personally I'd spend a little more and get a Ruger or Remington. Or a little more again and get an STI Spartan.

"...puts them well above the Norincos..." Made by non-slave labour making in a week what you make in a day. Norincos are made by slave labour making in a month what you make in a day.
"...name sounds to me like..." Geez, where've you been? Iver Johnson is a very old firearms manufacturing name.

My buddy has one and it's never run right. It's like the chamber is too small and rounds jam before the slide fully closes.

He likes to buy stuff and shoots it when he gets around to it so warranty is out of the question.

I guess it's like most 1911's, it needs tuning. (flame suit on)

There, I did it again!
Starting a thread, life gets busy and I neglect it....

Thank you for all the input.
I didn't mean to make fun of the Iver Johnson brand, I just never heard
anyone saying "hey check out my new Iver Johnson".

I'm still green behind the ears regarding handguns,
but I always liked the look of the 1911.
So the only logical conclusion is to pull the trigger and get one. :p
From what I read I"m leaning towards one of the SAM Models or the Canam Norinco deal.

I probably going to order it online but I have no idea what the difference is
between all models.
For example what makes these different?

SAM:
Commander
Commander Enhanced
Commander Enhanced STS
Thunderbolt
Military
Military Enhanced
Omega
Titan

Norinco:
Commander
Government
Sport model
1911 A1
1911 A1 High cap

Could someone point me towards a website that would explain the differences
in all these models?

Also How about aftermarket parts?
Does all the standard parts fit all these models?

Thank you.

Iver Johnson was a U.S. firearms, bicycle, and motorcycle manufacturer from 1871 to 1993. The company shared the same name as its founder, Norwegian-born Iver Johnson (1841-1895). After closing the name was resold and in 2006 Iver Johnson Arms opened in Rockledge, Florida selling shotguns and M1911 pistols. However, the new Iver Johnson company does not have any parts, guns or information relating to the pre-1993 company

BC604, If anyone comes up to you saying "hey! check out my Iver Johnson!" and his hands are anywhere near his pants, punch him directly in the face, hard and often, when he drops, run like he11. You do not want to be around when he gets up! ;)

...and perhaps reconsider where you hang out!?

Joking aside, the "Commander" series 1911's are 4" barrels and an excellent "carry gun". The "Government" series are the original 5" barrel. This nomenclature is in fact Colts, so other companies copying will sometimes use terminology like "Military" (ie.Gov.) and the like. "Enhanced" usually equates to spending $200 more for something you don't need and in the long run may not even want (mag wells, sh1ty extended mag releases, ambi safeties, poorly executed scroll work in ridicules places, you get the idea)

Not all parts are interchangeable on this platform and some need to be fitted by a gun smith or someone with proper tooling and knowhow.

ROFL I almost chocked on my lunch while reading it.Laugh2

Thank you for explaining it in such a simple way.
Now I don't feel bad by just buying the basic model, and
customizing it myself.

I just got the canammo 1911 gov + ammo deal and for $499 can't beat it. Shoots we'll and compatible with most parts out there so a good base to start with IMO
