Narrowed down the field in terms of brand but need some opinions on whether inside the waistband or outside the waistband holsters are the way to go in terms of IPSC or other competition shooting activities. Does IWB hamper the draw or is the effect negligible?

PPC involves retention duty type holsters. IPSC requires retention levels that prevent the handgun from falling out of the holster, but that's about it. No snaps or fancy catches.

IWB is for concealed carry. It might be something that is used in IDPA, but I don't know the rules for that sport. I don't believe an IWB holster is allowed in IPSC.

I've never heard of IWB not being allowed, but it wouldn't be competitive. but if you prefer them go ahead. But I would double check and make sure they are allowed in IPSC.
I used a CCW OWB holster for my first season, and it didn't really slow me down any.

I was thinking about holster position, made the mistake of thinking minimum from body, as opposed to Maximum distance from body.
that being said, it looks like fun.
The IWB I had was meant to be just off centre of my back, just behind my hip. I guess it would depend how you intend to position it and how it is drawn from the holster. (ie: where is it pointing when drawn)

I just ordered an OWB Desantis thumb-break suede-lined holster. Can't wait to try it out.

Thanks for your help.

Inside waistband holsters are legal for IPSC if they meet retention rules, which almost all do. We used Milt Sparks Summer Specials for years before speed rigs became fashionable. I still use the Summer Special for IDPA. It is fast enough, and stays in place during the draw. Once you get used to IWB carry, it's really comfortable.

I use a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 for CCW stuff (IDPA type matches duh!), and love it. I wish it was legal for carry up here...... sigh :(
