IWI CSR18 Carmel non restricted rifle with 18.6” Barrel

The plastic receiver looks thick judging by the geometry, my guess is that they have inserted some pretty thick steel pieces within the plastic for the bolt carrier guides and the cam pin guide.

In addition, with plastic shell like the AR160, the metal top rail needs to be bolted onto something. this means the receiver always becomes taller overall.

The carmel is basically a plastic shell version of a parade of G36 style of push rod gun - Bren, APC, TARNOW, HK433, SCAR.... A big rectangle BGC riding inside a plastic or extrusion box. The architecture is quite proven.

IWI created this years ago to address central american market that did not want X95 - but I think a lot of those targeted markets ended up with Galil at the end.

At least the ejection port cover opens the right way. HA.

Let me clarify, I was able to handle it here in Canada and get some time behind it.

So does it feel chunky? Is it heavy? It looks chunky and heavy but looks can be deceiving.

It is IWI so would be surprised if it isn't well built and doesn't run well.

There is an awful lot of "girth" in that Receiver set. Bigger generally means heavier, although with Polymer components that may not be the case. Still, it is awfully "Chunky" through the middle which has me wondering why? Why design a rifle that looks as woefully ugly as this one?

Normally I am down for anything semi-auto centerfire so long as it's reliable and reasonably accurate. That said, I am having a very tough time working up any anticipation nor excitement for this particular offering. I would much rather try (and will), the Makasi Rifle when it delivers later this Summer. The Makasi provides an interesting new blend of influences and features that the IWI Carmel does not.
I mean, it's IWI so she'll run, but she is pretty thiccc LOL.... Like the ugly girl you take home knowing she'll be freaky in bed but hope nobody sees! 😆

I am confused that we can get these non res, but on the flip side the X-95 was labelled prohib. Would love to get a carmel to replace the Tar21/X95.. but...

Fixed it for you.
Yeah, I thought that was quite a stretch as well. I could see how people might not like the aesthetics of the Carmel (I personally don't care, function always trumps form) but in what kind of bizarre parallel universe would a SKS (that now costs $1k) with a Stanag adapter be better than a rifle of modern design intended for military use built by a very reputable manufacturer chambered for a far superior cartridge? I mean, hell, by the time you buy the mag adapter, pay to have it installed, put on some type of optic mount and put the SKS in a stock that gives it even somewhat decent/modern ergos you're into it for more than the cost of the Carmel (or Makasi).
