I've owned one, and may yet get another.
I personally think the Tavor is a pretty neat rifle. Not my first or second choice - hell, not even in the top ten for semi autos...but it is a fun little rifle worthy of a spot in anyone's collection.
Therein lies the rub...the collection.
Depending on your demands from your rifle(s), it could very well be a quirky, niche gun that doesn't do anything you want really well, but does them mediocrely well. That was the case for me. When it came time to get out and do some shooting, there was and is always something better in my gun rack.
If you place significant value in a non-restricted, reasonably quick handling, compact, .223 auto-loader though, these are it's best attributes. Coincidently, those same attributes can be had in some other, considerably less expensive firearms like a Ruger mini 14...

Did I just compare the two, a Mini v. Tavor? Well not quite, but depending on what it is you are doing with them, that may not be so far a stretch.
Aside from the noted qualities, I think it's biggest selling feature is the military lineage.
If it was a proof of concept that wasn't fielded by a well known military? I think in such a case it would be as popular or maybe less so as rifles like the FS2000 and the Benelli MR1 - and not be receiving the attention it is getting.

My rifle is currently at the importers for warranty(hopefully) work. Check out tavor malfunctions on youtube. I wouldn't suggest against the rifle, But I have had major issues.

I own both a mini 14 and a tavor. My mini is a 582, tavor a gen 2. I've thought many times that the tavor does nothing the mini can't do just as well. Now keep in mind I live in British Columbia, Canada not some sand filled place with 24/7 firefights.

It’s an amazing piece of gear. I love it. You won’t be disappointed. The only gripe I have is how difficult it is to reload it with the bolt closed using a mag pinned to 5 rounds. The tolerances are really tight on mine and I literally have to slam the mag in and hit the mag butt a few times until I see it sit right else the mag will fall out… Now when I use magazines that were pinned to 5.5, no issues. On the same topic; the process to hold the bolt open isn’t the most intuitive either making the 5 round magazine loading process just more tedious and time consuming…. for me.
 
I opened mine up last night, after a few beer it was time to un-box it. Pictures just don't do it justice. The feel of this firearm, the quality... every aspect is excellent. It came with Tritium tipped removable back up sights installed, Tritium tipped integral back up sights built into the rail, a pretty crazy IDF sling, cleaning kit, E-lander mag.



It was made on Canada Day, Tel Aviv, Israel.


Sick.
