Which Izhevsk ones generally shoot better?

My logic (feel free to explain to me if it's wrong) is that a late war mosin is less likely to be worn since it wouldn't have been used as much. Maybe even issued to a soldier who was too busy guarding the rear and hardly used ever.

OR

Is a pre war better since they weren't built as hastily? My concern is wouldn't the rifling be more likely to become worn though extensive use (would've had a whole war to go through).

Gimme your thoughts/experiences please.

Bore condition is the important factor. Use, misuse and neglect can spoil a bore. Just get a rifle with an excellent barrel.

My issue is that if I buy Mosins online, I can't be sure of the condition. I know the answer will be "then buy some locally" but where I am I can't buy a mosin for under $200. That's why I wanted to see if there was any consensus on general mosin condition by date

Just ask Sergey at Westrifle. He'll tell you about bore condition on a rifle your interested in. He did right for me. Hard to beat for $100 MN :)
Pre or post war don't mean a thing if the barrel has been neglected.

But remember, 95% the weapons used during the war went throught a FTR process after the war, right before they went into stores. I say 95% b/c there are always war trophies, or rifles that end up on the bottom of a river or lake. If the barrel was worn it would have been replaced. That is different then a beat up crown. If only the crown was damaged that is where the counterboring comes into play.

If you really want to get a good one, get one from weimajack in the EE. Another plus is that all the ones he has there now are laminated stock.
