How many of you guys have J-Locks on your Model 700's? I just purchased a rifle with one on it and am taking it to the smith to get removed, he said you can buy a kit from brownells.
Have any of you guys had problems with them??

Ditch it, even Big Green saw the errors in their ways as they no longer put them on their 700's anymore.
The firing pin on the j-locks is so skinny the firing pin spring looks all jummbled up, and some even claim it gives in consistant thrust on the firing pin. I dont know about the pin thrust argument, but it sure looks like crap compared to a full firing pin model.
 
2/3 of my rifles have them, and I plan on removing them when I feel like it. I dont feel they make my rifles shoot any worse than what they'd be like with a non J shroud, but I hear lock time is improved with the non J, so it cant hurt.

I heard lock does improve but its usually because the spring and pin are upgraded since you're dumping the factory ones?? I was quoted around $80
to get a new pin, spring and shroud and this would speed up the lock time. Im not sure the exact make and model though but it was from Brownells.

I popped the j-lock out and machined a stainless plug to fill the hole, tig-welded it in and machined it to match the original contour. After bead blasted, you can barely see where it was.
A bit of work, but it was free.

I tried this on a blue one a couple years ago.....my welding skill on small parts was a bit lacking shall we say....:rolleyes: .....no reason why it won't work....speaking of Remington bolt plugs I've modified a few from that ugly tapered POS they put on 600/660's and Model Sevens to a straight cut and shortened them...see the one on the M7 243 I have for sale.....I can't understand WHY they had to put a different plug on these than the 700....700 plugs interchange if you mill the side for safety lever clearance...found out something else too...the old 600/660 plugs need to be milled off about an extra .040 to clear a M7 safety...
 
Rembo I have never even taken the bolt apart on a M-700 although I have read how to do it and made an attempt...

I could never find a way to get the firing pin sear to hold onto a surface while I shoved the bolt forward. Assuming you can do that you're then supposed to be able to knock out a pin that holds the whole thing together.

I have 5 M-700's but only 1 of them, my 2004 8x57 Classic has the dreaded J-Lock. If I was to change that how to go about it!? :confused:
 
there are other ways to do it but I built myself this little tool about 10 years ago..makes it a lot easier;) ...all you need are 4" of 1/2" pipe, two 1/2UNC nuts, a piece of 1/2UNC threaded rod or a long bolt with lots of thread....and a welder......1/4" rod for the handle is optional...a long bolt with socket or hex head will work...you have to drift out the small pin holding the cocking piece to the firing pin and it all comes apart....

Btw, I am shopping Brownells, I am going to buy the bolt shroud and firing pin assembly to remove the J-Lock from my otherwise beautiful 8x57 Classic.

So I need to figure out how to take the stupid bolt apart! :confused:
 
I looked through as much crap on the internet as I could on how to dis-assemble the M-700 bolt. None of it made sense to me. Supposedly there is some slot you can insert a coin in. I didn't see it, still don't get it... :redface:

Eventually I could see that the firing pin mechanism had to be held back in some way, so the bolt shroud could be unscrewed from the bolt body. I got a large wooden clamp and put that sucker on there and cinched it down tight on the firing pin and then it was easy to take the thing apart.

I read that the M-700's with the J-bolt had a smaller, thinner firing pin and that this caused the spring to bunch up on it. Now that I have the thing apart, I can see the terrible scrunched up spring on this bolt.

I went ahead and ordered a new firing pin assembly from Brownells, plus a Kleinendorst dis-assembly tool. :)

Look at the bottom picture, the shroud and pin thread into the pipe on the left (well the nut welded to the pipe actually), and the Tee handled "compressor" threads into the pipe/nut on the right. Keep turning the Tee handle and as it goes in it will compress the firing pin spring and let you disassmble and assemble the assembly. Very clever Rick. - dan
 
Oh so that's only for taking apart the firing pin assembly, not the basic removal of the firing pin/bolt shroud from the bolt body. :)

Yes I can see what it is supposed to do now!!

That Kleinendorst gadget that I ordered should make taking the bolt apart a snap. :)
