J. Manton & Company

John and Joseph Manton were two of the finest British gunmakers from the late 1700s through the first part of the 1800s.
In all probablity though, a J. Manton & Co. gun is one made in Belgium, and marked with the famous name as a marketing ploy. If the gun is of obvious very high quality, and has London proof marks, it might be the real thing. If the gun is ordinary, and the proofs are Belgian, you have one of many low priced guns made for the mass market.

iirc, it's a 10 GA, 30-32" barrel, Damascus barrel 1854. It must be a Belgium made. I'll take it out and check it for place of birth.

I find it hard to believe that a search did not turn up anything about Manton.....They have been around for a long time and were one of the premier British gun makers. Also the company still exists in a slightly different manner. I know people there.....
 
the Manton and co guns that I have seen were British guns but economy models. As I recall on the death of one of the Mantons, the company was carried on by his widow and later by the foreman of the plant as Manton and co.
