I'm about to inherit this J.P. Sauer SxS. I'm wondering if any here can help me to identify it or figure out its approximate value.

Here's What I know

J.P. Sauer and Sohn.
Made in Germany. I think 1963?
12 Guage, 2 3/4" , Full Choke / Half Choke
Serial # 286###

I know some of the pics aren't great.

The barrel is over 90%, perfect bluing, shiny bore. Action locks tight. Stock in good shape, ~80%, no major dings or dents. Has woodland scene on side of case, original, no rust. (Don't know if I should clean it or not, has some tarnish)

Hope you folks can help me out.

Thanks

If you want to find anything and everything out about SxS's, log onto doublegunshop forum and you will find all you need to know. Those fellows live and breathe SxS's and are very helpful. But, you may really become addicted to SxS's!!

It looks pretty damned good to me! My Dad has 2 Sauer guns and there' snothign quite so pleasant as he and I taking them out and chasing upland birds.

If you have the chokes reamed for steel shot you will smoke a turd in hell! :D

Please don't polish the "tarnish" - unless I misunderstand you, that is colour case hardening and the mottled appearance is what the action is designed to look like. It is not difficult to rub away the "tarnish" with steel wool or (Shudder!) sandpaper or a polishing wheel. Unfortunately many fine old guns have been defaced by such unwise maintenance efforts. Case hardening does eventually wear away with use and time, but that "patina" is a badge of honour, not neglect. You have a well made and artistic firearm there, hope you enjoy it!

The average purchaser would probably be interested in the $500 range. There are, however, some folks who REALLY appreciate a nice Sauer. I was surprised by the price that was paid for my pre-war Sauer earlier this year.
