I just recently picked up a .270 Winchester bolt gun on the EE but haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet. I'm just wonderin" what your thoughts are on this iconic caliber?

I see the 270 Win as the 30.06 for guys/gals who are secure/confident enough to shoot at medium/large animals with something smaller than a 30 cal :)

Great caliber. I use .270 a fair bit and don't have a single complaint about how it has performed for me.

Its a great round, capable of taking anything in north America
You are of course right, but I have story to tell....
About 20 years ago I read in newspaper about hunter from Kelowna, B.C. being killed by grizzly bear.
I think many of us in B.C. remember this unfortunate accident.
He was suprised (stalked?) and had only shot once his 270Win rifle killing the bear but was mauled by grizzly anyway.
Both were found dead some time latter.
I allways kept asking myself; would hunter be still allive today if instead his 270Win he had say 30-06Spr or 35Whelen in his hands?
This is not to start "best bear defence caliber" but simple yes or not for an answer would do.

In my opinion the 270 of course has been responsible for taking a lot of animals and will continue to do so because of it's popularity. But it never ever would have seen the popularity it enjoys now if it was not for Jack O'Conner pushing it at every given opportunity. The round just isn't that good to have done it on it's own merit.

Jack hyped the 270 the most, because he knew which side his bread was buttered on and he pushed Winchester.
Some other favourites of his that just happened to come in the Model 70, also, were 375 H&H and 30-06, as well as a calibre he really liked, the 7 x 57.
In a story near the end of his career, he pointed out how many hundreds of game animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the 7x57 and how many hundreds of animals he had either shot, or seen shot, with the Rem. 7mm magnum.
He said he could not determine which calibre was the best killer. A good hit with either one meant a dead animal and a poor hit with either one meant a wounded animal.

With a 30-06 I don't think it would have made a difference, but with a 35 whelen loaded with 250s I think it would have made a difference IMO

One of the best all-round chamberings for N. American game. Maybe a little on the light side IMO for large game, ie. elk, moose, grizzly, but with the proper premium bullet it's capable here as well. You'd have a hard time finding a more perfect deer/sheep/caribou round.

Fine cartridge... makes ZERO sense for me personally, as I have numerous 6.5mm's and 7 mm's... don't need or want a .277" ####-eyed, son of a so-&-so... just personal preference though... if one had no 6.5mm's or 7mm's, then it makes a "sort of" sense. JMO.

I basically started with the .270 and for many years it was the only big game rifle I had. I can't remember ever shooting anything with one that left me wishing I'd used something else, but never shot anything bigger than moose with one. Once I switched to the STW for open country I had to struggle for a reason to take the .270 anywhere.

I have a couple of 270 Wins that I shoot a lot and still can't think of a reason to take hunting. Its not that that there is something wrong with it, its just that everything that is right about it is even more right with the 270 WSM and 270 Weatherby and I have those too.

I believe that the 30-06, 270 and 308 are rated as number 2,3,4 as the most purchased/popular cartridge in North America,...............anyone care to take a guess at the number #1 most popular cartridge?............pretty elementary. OP, your choice is most sound.

us southern boys shoot a 270 because it is the biggest cal we are aloud to shoot nothing to do with good old jack .we can get away with one gun to cover are small game and a once a year trip north .works for a lot of us Dutch
